I find it very interesting that a lot of films with strong female characters fail the Bechdale test. Says a hell of a lot about the film industry.

I have to agree with Wallison that I think we have moved backwards, although I think in the US, that leap backwards is even more profound. I don't think a show like Roseanne would be shown today. Or at least, not with a cast that looked as ordinary as they did.

"And you have landed on...community chest! Also known as Dorien's boobs"

The only quote I have remembered from it for all these years.

I agree, love it even more now.

I loved that show.

I loved Roseanne. The female characters were so well written and complex for a comedy. Nothing like it now, sadly.

I don't know about ahead of it's time. I just rewatched the first four episodes on Youtube and they are mildly sexist, mildly classist, weightist and extremely homophobic! Grin Good show though.

Roseanne & Golden Girls were superb.
So was Ellen and 30 Rock.
Back in the day there was Rhoda, Mary Tyler Moore and I Love Lucy.

The US has a proud history of excellent female-led sit coms that have impacted on the times.
I remember the episode when Ellen came out - it was a genuine tv event.

Wallison · 03/11/2013 19:59

YY to Ellen coming out - I thought the revolution was starting!
