To put a note on my door asking people not to knock tonight...

awakemysoull · 31/10/2013 14:41

I have a 4 yo and 4 month old.

I know it will be chaos at bedtime and once they are settled I really don't want them to be woken up.

I remember last year the door went every 5 minutes for a few hours with guisers and it was really annoying.

Would I be a total cow to put up a polite note saying please don't knock the door, I have sleeping children but have a great night?

Or something along those lines.

I'm prepared for a flaming it's only one night etc etc but to be honest I'm on the bones of my arse as it is so I don't really have spare cash to buy sweets etc for the village kids.

I'm putting a bowl of sweets by the front door and a note to say help yourself but please don't knock.

coldwater1 · 31/10/2013 15:31

I did it one year. Had just bought my 4 week old terminally ill baby home to die and put a polite notice on the door asking for no callers as baby was ill. No one knocked.

shutitweirdo · 31/10/2013 15:32

We have our no trick or treaters sign up. We also have no carol singers one too. We have young children and there is an old people home opposite us and they don't want people round. Think people know just to avoid our road now.

Mojavewonderer · 31/10/2013 16:42

YANBU I have put up two in case they miss the first one :)

JohnnyUtah · 31/10/2013 16:47

I can turn off my doorbell too - can you turn off the circuit it is on if it doesnt have its own switch?

sparkle101 · 31/10/2013 16:48

Yanbu I did this last year and it was fine.

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 31/10/2013 16:49

Round our way, the protocol is to only knock on doors with pumpkins etc outside. I would think putting a note out would be fine. After all it's mainly parents and primary age kids so the parents would understand the need to not disturb a 4 month old.

RooRooTaToot · 31/10/2013 16:49

YANBU

All previous years I have had the opposite problem, though - bought masses of sweets, but no-one has turned up! I didn't realise about the pumpkin code, so I've dressed my front window and displayed my pumpkin there tonight. Will take it down when 14 month yr old goes to bed at 7.30.

Round my city, the majority of houses don't get knocked on, but YANBU to make doubly sure.

CoffeeTea103 · 31/10/2013 16:50

Yanbu. You don't need to justify yourself, some people are just not into it. I'm sure there will be many such notes.

Amy106 · 31/10/2013 16:54

YANBU at all.

specialsubject · 31/10/2013 16:56

do you have a printer, OP? There are plenty of 'trick or treat no thanks' posters to download. Basically says 'we're not playing but enjoy your night'

just about to put mine up.

fisharefriendsnotfoood · 31/10/2013 16:56

i normally love all the kids coming round - but got the sick bug, so lights off and hope no one knocks the door, i might trick them by puking in them

AlwaysDancing1234 · 31/10/2013 16:59

coldwater1 I can't imagine how awful that must have been for you, I'm glad people read your note and didn't disturb you at a terribly difficult time. I will be putting a polite note on the door after a certain time and hopefully people will take notice.

fanjofarrow · 31/10/2013 17:03

I just keep the hall light off and ignore the buggers that bang on the door.

awakemysoull · 31/10/2013 17:05

Thanks everyone I have laminated a sign that the local police issued and stuck it to the door.

The weather is awful here just now it's full on thunder and lightning, hailstones, wind and it's freezing. I doubt many people will be out but the sign is up so I know I should have some peace.

I love Halloween and all the fun that comes with it but not this year I'm stressed enough as it is.

I have done this before, but they knocked anyway!

OP - I started another thread top show this photo that Dd sent me, but since it's appropriate to this thread, here's the pic just for you

D0oinMeCleanin · 31/10/2013 17:09

I wish we had to put a note up Sad

Every year my kid's get dressed up and wait in the hall with Whippy the bat dog of doom all ready to hand out Haribo and be fussed over. One trick or treater they had last year. One.

We put a happy halloween sign in the window. After a while the kids were convinced that no-one could see it, so they brought down the light up Snowman from the decorations box and fashioned him a witches hat from cardboard and poster paint and stuck him up next to the sign, they've made me buy a spider-fairy lights this year Grin

YANBU to put a sign up if you don't want to be bothered.

coldwater1 · 31/10/2013 17:12

Yes it was pretty horrendous and traumatic. Its scarred me for life Hmm

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 31/10/2013 17:13

YANBU, I was going to put a sign up but haven't had a chance yet. DS has a really bad chest infection and they're already knocking on the door and waking him when he's sleeping on my lap. Angry

It gives me the rage.

We never have a pumpkin or anything but every year they still insist on bloody coming round.

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 31/10/2013 17:13

Sad Coldwater Thanks

ChestyCoffin · 31/10/2013 17:31

YANBU

Door ignorer here.

MammaTJ · 31/10/2013 17:47

I love it, I decorate my house, my children go out with DP. I stay home and answer the door.

BUT, if you don't want to join in, that's fine by me.

My friend, who normally joins in, isn't this year. She has been to hospital today with her DD and been told that she likely had absense seizures as well as her 'normal' epilepsy. She is exhausted and mentally drained, so has put the sign up. SINBU and YANBU!

I have done it!!!

BellaVita · 31/10/2013 18:03

I hate Halloween.

I will not be answering the door. We even get teens knocking at about 9/9.30 - they are too bloody old to be trick or treating.
