to think that £150 is a lot of money for this

just need to see if IABU about this potential cost.

In recent storm a branch if a tree in our garden has almost snapped and is lying down in my neighbours side of the garden. We are going to have to get the tree trimmed and branches removed to stop it being lopsided.

It is just the cost. NDN's &
friend has said he can do it but wants £150.

We are super skint and I need this like a hole in the head. However if this is what I need to pay I will. I just feel it is a lot of money but don't want to upset mtg n
NDN who is a very good NDN.

AIBU to think it is a lot and WWYD?

Cant you get quotes from elsewhere and see if can get it cheaper first?

Polyethyl · 29/10/2013 19:13

Impossible to know without seeing the size of the branch.Do the ususual thing of getting 3 quotes.

YesterdayI · 29/10/2013 19:14

It is hard to say if it is a lot or not. I would get another quote from a qualified tree surgeon.

Check if the costs include removal of the waste.

Littleredsquirrel · 29/10/2013 19:15

Leave it. So what if the tree is lopsided for a while.

idiuntno57 · 29/10/2013 19:17

and risk upsetting NDN if I leave it and don't use her friend?

YoureBeingAnAnyFuckerFan · 29/10/2013 19:18

They cant just leave it. The branch is still attatched and is lying over in tje neighbours garden.

harticus · 29/10/2013 19:18

Sounds about right.

It sounds like a proper tree surgeon job though not just someone with a chain saw.
Who is the mate of the NDN - does he know what he is doing?

Check to see if it is a protected tree too. A proper tree surgeon will take the requisite steps to make sure you don't fall foul of the law.

This is useful

Littleredsquirrel · 29/10/2013 19:20

Yes. If you can't afford it say, "our poor old tree is going to look a bit lopsided for a while until we can get the money together to prune it. If you give me your friends number we can call him when we are ready to level it up a bit"

Then don't call him when/if the time comes.

DifferenceEngine · 29/10/2013 19:22

Get a tree surgeon.

If you get problems later with the tree, like it falling on the house, a car, or it causing subsidence, the insurers will use the fact that a.n. other rahter than a qualified tree surgeon dicked about with it to wriggle out of paying out.

That also makes a good excuse if you don't want to upset your ndn. Just say Insurers will only allow x or y firm of tree surgeons to do the work.

Get a tree surgeon to have a look. Advice and quote will be free, you can decide what to do once you have had some expert opinions.

Littleredsquirrel · 29/10/2013 19:23

Oh sorry, I thought the dangerous branch was lying on the griund of the neighbours property And this was about mKing the tree look pretty again.if there is just one dangerous branch then that shouldn't cost £150 to take down. We recently had four whole trees cut down logged and split for £600

MaryPoppinsBag · 29/10/2013 19:23

It's too much money.
We are having a massive conifer taken down by a proper Tree surgeon for £80.00. He is just dropping the tree and my father is getting rid if the waste fir us. We are in Yorkshire.

We had a quote if £220 from some opportunist gardener who came round with a business card. Although this included waste removal.

WaitingForMe · 29/10/2013 19:28

Does it have to be a tree surgeon? I had a huge pruning job taking 3 men about an hour done for £60 (I'm in the Cotswolds). DH does various gardening jobs for £25 p/h which is average for this area and I'd expect gardeners to cost less elsewhere.

Without seeing the size of the tree I'd say 150 is a rip off.

We had a whole tree cut down, and the stump removed from the ground with some kind of stump-drilling machine for £100.

idiuntno57 · 29/10/2013 19:46

it's not protected. It is really the issue of upsetting NDN who is a star for the sake of saving £50 or so which I can't afford but a neighbour is for life and all that (been here 40 odd yrs no plans on moving)

OP posts:
idiuntno57 · 29/10/2013 19:59

sorry can't post pic as it is pitch dark but it is a mid size silver birch. Not near power lines etc just big ish branch hanging into NDN garden and likely to fall at some point.

WhoNickedMyName · 29/10/2013 20:04

Why would your NDN be upset if you didn't use their friend to do the work?

JaneFonda · 29/10/2013 20:07

I'm sure your NDN was just trying to be helpful when they suggested their friend - I doubt they would be annoyed if you didn't use them.

You could always say that for insurance purposes, you need to use an approved tree surgeon, if you're worried about upsetting them.

idiuntno57 · 29/10/2013 20:08

because it implies that I think NDN's friend is trying to rip us off (nb he is a gardener/handy outside person by trade) and that I don't trust her judgement.

OP posts:
ferretyfeet · 29/10/2013 20:08

Well if it's costing you £150 you should be able to say who does it

ferretyfeet · 29/10/2013 20:08

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 29/10/2013 20:09

Well you need to get the branch removed, you can't escape that.

Mary a lot of the cost is in the waste disposal, so you can't compare the two at all.

Ring a couple of tree surgeons OP, rather than use the NDN's friend. You have no idea whether he is competent, or insured. If he drops a branch through your window or your neighbours then you will find yourself with a bigger bill to settle.
