To try & return this without a receipt?

It's been a shit week.

Just returned to uni after a surprise pregnancy and consequently 6 months off on ML. There's a lot of horrible things going on in my life at the moment and I'm quite fragile so please go easy on me!

My laptop has suddenly decided it won't turn on. I got it as a Christmas present from my toxic mother, who, after a lifetime of abuse I have finally managed to go NC with. The police had to get involved, it was very difficult but I'm working with a counsellor and hope one day to be totally free of her emotionally.

Anyways, I desperately need this laptop to do my work. I can't afford the bus fare to the library let alone a new laptop. As it's only about 10 months old it should still be under warranty with HP and I think she bought it from our local PC World. ( I know I should never have accepted it but we had a very twisted controlling relationship thinly veiled as concern for her struggling kids.)

What can I do? I have a feeling I'm just gonna be laughed out the shop if I turn up without a receipt.

You've got nothing to lose.

whenever pc world sell something they take the customers name and address, so if you can give them that, you should be ok hopefully

RedHelenB · 29/10/2013 18:08

And if you know the date they should be able to pull the receipt up for you. Did you register it at the time?

Wesdly · 29/10/2013 18:14

It might be just as easy to go direct through HP. If you go on the website and click on support you'll find somewhere on there that says contact us.

You'll have to go through a troubleshoot over the phone but it's easier than having to deal with PC World who would probably tell you to contact HP anyway.

If all the warranty stuff was filled in it should be linked to the serial number, they may be able to confirm they sold it & when by that too.

It's worth a go, worst case scenario they'll say "no" & you'll have to get a local computer bod to have a lookk (wouldn't use PC world for that bit)

For a laptop they will have definitely taken down name and address details. When I worked for Currys people lost their receipts all the time. They won't laugh at you.

Good luck OP, I hope things start to look up for you soon. x

And don't forget that your legal rights are with the retailer, not the manufacturer. If the laptop has failed after 10 months, and it hasn't suffered accidental damage or misuse, they are obliged to repair it.
