.. And mean to think this episode of trick or treating is not on?

I ask cos I've never had young kids only stepchildren so don't know the kind of pressures parents come under but I saw something today which I thought was simply wrong. I was walking home from work across a busy town centre and saw what i presume was a young family. Little boy, Dad holding his hand alongside Mum who was holding little girls hand. Both kids had a lit up Halloween pumpkin lamp. The family was walking along and as people passed them the kids we going "trick or treat" and stopping presumably for people to reply. both adults stood holding their hands and smiling. Now I didn't stay round to see what happened next but I thought what on earth are the parents expecting...that random people would have sweets on them, or that they'd give money?! It just seemed an odd thing to do especially early and when the kids weren't in costume? maybe they were just letting kids have their fun but I wouldn't have thought parents would feel comfortable putting people on the spot like that?

I don't agree with trick or treating in any form, in fact I bloody hate it and wish parents would stop allowing children to do it.

DevilsRoulette · 28/10/2013 21:51

ridiculous of them if they were actually expecting the kids to be given stuff but more likely they were doing that 'don't I have the cutest kids you agree they are the cutest kids don't you, aren't they just the sweetest things you've ever seen' smile . Also ridiculous of course Grin but less cheeky.

trick or treating is a one evening thing only. 31st. Ive never let my kids do it but I let them give out sweets to people who knock. On the night.

Anyone who tried to come round earlier would be sent away.

Same here. I wasn't allowed to go out begging, as my mum put it.

HappyHalloweenMollyHooper · 28/10/2013 21:55

Sounds like the children were just having a giggle, Halloween is all very exciting for them.

Perhaps the parents just thought it was harmless, unless they were demanding people give their kids money?

I would have simply smiled and said "Happy Halloween!" and walked on if I didn't have any change on me.

I always :o at begging.

Have you seen the prices of some of the costumes these kids have? I doubt very much they need those charitable fun sized mars bars.

I love trick or treat. My DC get taken out my DP to go to decorated houses. I stay home to answer the door, as my house is decorated!

The situation in your OP does not fit this though. YANBU!!

There were a couple of kids doing this on the tube last week, they had a couple of adults with them too. My inclination is to think people complaining about trick or treating are being OTT, but I'd never seen kids doing it as plain begging off strangers before. They were being quite pushy too...
