Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga.... have some pride for God's sake. You are successful and talented women. Prostituting yourselves for your art is not necessary. There was camel toe tonight. Before the watershed. with simulated shagging on a piano. Sad

Why can't a successful woman be successful without having to perform virtually naked?

OP posts:
poorbuthappy · 27/10/2013 22:33

off to bed none the fucking wiser.

PacificDogwood · 27/10/2013 22:33

Is twerking not, like, so over?

Not as a cultural, Jamaican Dance Hall phenomenon, but as an acquired-by-any-popstress-who-needs-to-boost-her-profile gimmick IYWKIM.

So ov-ah.

But yes, I am also v Hmm and angry at the empty sexualisation of every little stupid, samey pop song. Stop and desist.

I am now dying to know what your link led to, poorbuthappy Grin

SirChenjin · 27/10/2013 22:39

Oh no, definitely not over judging by some of the photos that other girls have posted on my DD's FB page Shock

The thing is, Gaga and Miley are actually very talented women and don't need to do this to sell their music - but this brainwashing at a subliminal level seems to have affected even them.

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2013 22:41

My five year old son saw gaga tonight - I was in the kitchen. He was horrified and upset. 'She was naked mummy.'

I genuinely only saw the first minute or so of Lady Gaga

Did she end up removing the seashell bra and high waisted granny pants? Shock

I didn't realise that. Now I understand why there has been some angst on other threads about the pre-watershed Blush

killpeppa · 27/10/2013 22:54

no she just removed the wig, and the shells fell.

it wasn't too graceful

Birdsgottafly · 28/10/2013 15:37

I don't think that Gaga's performance can in any way be compared to the train wreck that MC is.

I would put Gaga under the category of Performance Artist, she has performed in very little and in "Outrageous" outfits for the last five years, since her first hit.

She isn't overtly sexual in the same way as MC or CA.

I would liken her use if her body and look in a similar way as Pink, it is in part a protest, because she doesn't conform to any expectations, from a Patriarchal POV.

Whether it should of been saved until after the Watershed is a different matter.

Gaga's performances and costumes are not done to sell her music, they are an extension. Com

Birdsgottafly · 28/10/2013 15:38

Sorry, completely different than what MC is doing and Mariah Carey etc.

SirChenjin · 28/10/2013 15:45

I think Gaga is infinitely more talented that MC, and she certainly doesn't use sex to sell her music in the same way as MC/Rhianna/etc do. However, I do think she's in danger of crossing the line - some of the tit shots recently have been pretty gratuitous, and it's interesting that she's chosen to go down this route just as another album is coming out.

hiddenhome · 28/10/2013 15:59

Why don't they just get it over with and show us their cervixes then we can all get back to trying to find decent music Hmm My brain is in the post naked era ffs, I hope everyone else catches up.

SirChenjin · 28/10/2013 16:12

Grin Hidden - so true!

It's just grim - it's as if we've stepped through to some parallel universe and into a pornified version of the 1950s. Very weird.

PacificDogwood · 28/10/2013 16:18

Oh yes, bring on the post-naked era.

Grin
BurlyShassey · 28/10/2013 17:19

no ones explained what twerking actually is though. WHAT IS IT???????

theres controversy over sexism and stuff yet these women choose to do what they do,

yes, they CHOOSE, they have a brain, they have a tongue (Miley Grin), they can say ''NO''.

BurlyShassey · 28/10/2013 17:21

sexism??? I meant (thesausrus correcty-thing) sexualisation of women/girls and the 'role models' etc etc.

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 28/10/2013 17:30

I saw the Tiffany video of 'I Think We're Alone Now' somewhere and she performed in a woolly jumper. You would never, ever get a young female pop star doing this now. It just seems automatic that they must be overtly sexual in their videos/performances, regardless of what they are actually singing about. The only exception I can think of off the top of my head is Adele.

I do think Gaga is a bit different though and although she was performing in a flesh coloured bikini it was very different to Miley's horrible VMAs thing. Although Gaga is often sexual , it's always in a weird way - on X Factor she looked a bit crazed with dishevelled hair and not much make up which I thought was making some kind of point, though I don't know exactly what. She is much more interesting and not a soft porn cliche like Rihanna etc. I find watching the music channels too depressing and frequently shocking to bother with them now so I have to say I don't know precisely what twerking is either...

BurlyShassey · 28/10/2013 17:40

Jelly and also Debby Harry. she was gorgeous, and sexy but not cavorting around, writhing and wearing next to nothing to sell records.

agree, I can only think of Adele being the only person around atm that actually wears clothes!

Mandy2003 · 28/10/2013 17:54

For *BurleyShassey]]

BurlyShassey · 28/10/2013 17:57

Not that im interested in actually twerking, Mandy, others asked too! thought I was the only one who didn't know what it was!

SirChenjin · 28/10/2013 18:15

Agree re Debbie Harry, Tiffany etc. I'm ancient, so my reference points are women like Chrissie Hynde, Annie Lennox, Sinead O'Connor, Kim Wilde, Cyndi Lauper, Patty Smyth, Stevie Nicks etc etc - none of them used this kind of hypersexualisation to sell their music (or themselves...). That's what I mean about the lack of progress by young women in the music business - it's not about talent so much anymore and all about how much flesh you can get out, how many times you're mentioned on Twitter, and how much shock you can cause. Utterly grim Sad

BurlyShassey · 28/10/2013 18:24

Sirchenjin agree with everyone else you said too.

I think before Madonna, the most sexual one was Kate Bush in the Babooshka video, even so, this was a women with talent, and not naked or twerking either!

Tailtwister · 28/10/2013 18:37

YANBU OP, it's getting tedious.

However, it's bloody hard to do. I watched a video on Youtube which kind of broke it down a bit and it was impossible.

NotintheMiddle · 28/10/2013 18:39

So it's just shaking your bum?

Oh god I hope so - a kind of moral backlash?

lessonsintightropes · 28/10/2013 19:40

Ahhhh I finally understand now someone told me to look at the Jamaican twerking videos. I just thought MC was imitating doggy style sex - she wasn't - she was trying to wiggle her arse. But sadly, because it's non-existent, it just looked really weird and unsexy. You need a decent booty to pull it off and sadly neither she nor Gaga has the arse for it.

PacificDogwood · 28/10/2013 19:43

Oh, nononono, please no moral backlash, but maybe one of taste? Or dignity? Or a sense of 'a time and a place for everything'??

I thought the dancers in the first video linked to by Mandy were amazing, but still not what I want to see with my dinner iykwim (but then again I also struggle watching these double-jointed circus performers Hmm)
