To be shocked I have a period?

I have had the mirena coil for over 4 years. I had it in to control very heavy, continuous periods. Since insertion my periods ceased. Until today, and I have blood! I'm really confused as to why this is here though. My Mirena is due out in April, so can it be that it's running out? Since Friday, I've gone on a drastic healthy eating plan to control fibroids. I've dropped all dairy, meat, soya and eggs from my diet and really upped on the green leafy veggies that I never ate before. Could it be that my body likes my new diet and is reacting in this way? Could I be pregnant? Im so confused, but hAppy. It's quite nice seeing this blood! My femininity is intact!

Anna I am in the same boat too. Mirena for last 4 years with no bleeding and now my periods (although still very light) seem to be returning along with breast tenderness etc.

I'm due to have the Essure sterilisation soon but I am getting a further Mirena inserted at the same time as it can take a few months to become fully effective. I feel nervous about having the Mirena removed for good as it is lovely not to have periods but the time has come for non-hormonal contraception I feel and I would like my libido back please.

Could be the diet. I started Cambridge and twice had to quit because it triggered non stop round the clock and calendar periods. I'd thought I was going through some sort of early menopause prior to that. But apparently a no wheat, no alcohol, no carbs diet agrees with my body (or disagrees depending on your viewpoint) and the period flows and flows and flows and flows.

Thanks so much for all your replies. Its so reassuring to Know im not alone. I'm going tomorrow for a consultation with gynae to have a chat because I'd like my coil out (time to start trying for a baby!) but I'll be buggered if my heavy bleeding comes back!

I feel happy to see blood! I'm normal! Just to ask, where any of you ladies able to feel the coil strings? I've had a feel but think ahem, dp may have pushed them out of the way ha ha. Not that he's hung like a donkey, mind!

I think My GP said that towards the end of its life the hormone part wears off so you have in effect a non hormonal coil, but it's still safe contraception wise. Dr google may be your friend, or your GP of course!

I have had a mirena for about seven years now (more than one) although apparently they leave them in for up to seven years in norway anyway. This was presented to me as an option when i had the last one put in because i had to have it done in hospital under sedation as theycouldn't get the first one out Shock. I generally don't bleed, although to be fair my periods were very irregular before but occasionally have some blood. i get the sore breasts and grumpiness to a degree though.

Hopasholic · 28/10/2013 10:18

I'm thinking about getting mine taken out due to the sore breasts, some months it's horrendous, other months I think, it's ok I can cope with that. I have a 'lump' which appears each month, just where my wires meet on my bra and have to stuff it with cotton wool Sad.
Other times, although infrequently now, I can't bear to take my bra off for the tenderness Angry

Waiting for DH to have the snip, < a pig has just flown by my kitchen window............... >

Must be the storm Grin

No, it's quite common, my GP said, for the Mirena to "run out" (in terms of period relief, not contraception) early, especially if you're prone to fibroids/heavy periods. Happened to me. If you were happy with it before, consider replacing it.
