To ask how to stop the sick feeling after anaesthetic

Had an operation on Wednesday, iv morphine and general anaesthetic had me being very sick until yesterday afternoon. I'm home now but can't get the sickness feeling to subside.

Any ideas? I'm unreasonable to post here but it's high traffic and I feel like shit. Jacobs cream crackers seem to be my new best friend

Are you taking codeine by any chance?

WholeNutt · 26/10/2013 08:15

Yes I am though today I've decided unless I'm really in pain I'll stick with paracetamol.

Codeine makes me, my Dad and sister sick. And they always give it after an op. I'd stop it, if it doesn't make a difference and you're in pain you can start it again. Or use ibuprofen x Hope you feel better soon.

HairyGrotter · 26/10/2013 08:27

Yup, I agree, quit with the codeine if you can. I am always sick on anaesthetics, I get very very unwell. I feel for you :(

PeppaTwig · 26/10/2013 08:30

They can add anti sickness medicine to an anaesthetic. I always mention it and haven't had any trouble since.

CrohnicallyTired · 26/10/2013 08:59

I can't believe you were being sick and they didn't give you an antiemetic! I was in hospital (didn't have an op) and I only mentioned feeling sick and they got me cyclizine I think it was, and asked if I wanted some at discharge. Can you phone OOH and see if you can get some? Failing that, I think some travel sickness drugs can help. Or try and get your codeine changed- I found dihydrocodeine better (less sicky feeling) than codeine phosphate, there's also things like Tramadol that some people prefer.

HairyGrotter · 26/10/2013 09:03

The anti sickness meds made me worse! I was pumped full of them but still puked just after the delivered my DD. Sadly, some are just hyper sensitive to anaesthetics.

HicDraconis · 26/10/2013 09:09

Get someone to prescribe you either ondansetron wafers (that dissolve in your mouth so you don't have to worry about taking tablets & being sick) or a hyoscine patch.

Both are excellent antidotes to anaesthetic induced nausea. The patch can stay on for 3 days but may give you a very dry mouth/blurred vision.

Latara · 26/10/2013 09:11

See if you can get to the emergency GP (call 111) and get some anti-sickness meds on prescription.

A good home remedy is ginger tea (slice some fresh ginger and brew in hot water in a mug).

Apart from that it's just time that's needed for the anaesthetic to get out of your system - I know you feel sick but try to keep sipping water.

Hope you feel better soon.

WholeNutt · 26/10/2013 09:24

I've had anti sickness meds whilst in hospital I wonder if it is in fact the codeine. I'll stop taking that and see if I feel any better if not I'll call my GP.

Sucks to be recovering and feel sick, one or the other please!!

Codeine can make you feel sick. Would Migraleve be better as one of them has an anti-nausea element. It probably wont be as strong as what you have been prescribed though.

whois · 26/10/2013 12:39

Oh god I have never been as sick as after my first general anesthetic. Puking non stop for about 24 hours.

Having the anti sickness meds sorted it out for me on future generals.

SeaSickSal · 26/10/2013 13:54

My local hospital will put a little acupuncture plaster with a needle on it in your wrist before the procedure. You rub it afterwards to stop the sickness and it really does work. Could you find out if they offer this or if you could buy one yourself/get an acupuncturist to do it and wear it during the op?

Beastofburden · 26/10/2013 13:57

Ibuprofen will also make you sick.

susiedaisy · 26/10/2013 13:59

I would phone gp for an antiemetic

SeaSickSal · 26/10/2013 14:06

Oh I see you've had the op. Could you get an acupuncturist to make a home call perhaps?

Mouserama · 26/10/2013 21:48

Motilium relieves nausea, as does Buccastem - both are available from pharmacies. You'd have to check that they don't interact with any other medication you are on though
