To think it's fine to drive my automatic car with an injured foot?

My driving foot is not the injured one!

I need to take myself to a walk-in clinic because I've injured my fucking foot. I thought it was my usual ligament strain but I'm not convinced it's not broken.

I'll probably phone my insurance to check but I think it should be fine or AIBU? I'm not going until tomorrow morning btw, so if I get replies saying I'm being a twat, I won't drive.

YANBU. You only use one foot in an automatic, and if your driving foot is fine I don't see the problem.

Iaintdunnuffink · 25/10/2013 17:36

I did. Even after an operation on it, it wasn't long before I was back driving.

candycoatedwaterdrops · 25/10/2013 17:37

No, I don't see the problem either but my mother had a panic and told me it might invalidate my insurance. Confused

I drive an automatic using two feet. Two feet + two pedals = no brainer, imo. But if you're used to driving a manual, seems obvious you could use one foot between the pedals.

KissesBreakingWave · 25/10/2013 17:39

NBU. Disabled people are what automatics are for.

Justforlaughs · 25/10/2013 17:41

It depends on whether they are likely to send you to the hospital in an ambulance Grin. No problem with driving an automatic with an injured foot. (On the other hand I do have a problem with the lady who drives round our town using her walking stick to activate the brake! Shock)

MrsBennetsEldest · 25/10/2013 17:42

Pumpkin you are doing it wrong. Only one foot is needed, that way you cannot press the brake and accelerator at the same time. If you look in the footwell, at the back on the left hand side there is a footrest for your left foot.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 25/10/2013 17:45

You are fine as long as your right foot is ok. I always drive with one foot. That's how you are supposed to do it right? I'm sure it's for the reason mrsbennetseldest says.

BrianTheMole · 25/10/2013 17:46

Yes you only use the right foot for an automatic. Using two feet sounds dangerous.

clam · 25/10/2013 17:47

You can't use both feet!!!!!! Shock That's really dangerous!

Justforlaughs · 25/10/2013 17:49

Does anyone know what happens if you press the accelerator at teh same time as the brake? (total thread derailer! sorry)

SauvignonBlanche · 25/10/2013 17:49

I drove for ages with my left foot in a cast. A nosy neighbour asked if I should, I thought they were nuts.

Artandco · 25/10/2013 17:49

Pumpkin- isn't that really unsafe? Your supposed to not be able to put on brake and accelerator at the same time incase you muddle them

candycoatedwaterdrops · 25/10/2013 17:50

My dad drives his auto with two feet. It's fucking terrifying and vomit inducing.

OP posts:
SauvignonBlanche · 25/10/2013 17:50

I know - you break very sharply!

OneStepCloser · 25/10/2013 17:53

Its fine, Dsis has only one leg and drives an automatic, I feel safer with her than my other sis with two legs!

MrsBennetsEldest · 25/10/2013 17:54

Justforlaughs, you will ruin your engine, brakes and transmission:)

Justforlaughs · 25/10/2013 17:58

OK, thanks for that MrsBennet
next question, why would anyone get their feet muddled up any more than getting the pedals confused Artandco?

littlewhitebag · 25/10/2013 18:10

I have an automatic and my left foot is redundant. I think you will be fine. That's how you should drive an automatic and lots of disabled people drive them for that very reason.

flowery · 25/10/2013 18:11

You will be fine, and it's very dangerous to drive using one foot for each pedal.

Artandco · 25/10/2013 18:14

Because you always have foot on accelerator unless braking so your foot is moved over

KippyVonKipperson · 25/10/2013 18:15

I think someone like Michael Schumacher used to drive his racing car with both feet

Apparently not. I have a physical condition, which was why I opted for automatic in the first place but from the outset using a foot on each pedal seemed the most instinctive thing to do.

My instructor, who was sceptical, phoned the powers that be to check whether using a foot on each pedal is wrong/allowed, and was told the driver can use one foot or both on the pedals "so long as he/she doesn't lose substantial control of the vehicle". Not even mere loss of control, but substantial loss of control.

clam · 25/10/2013 18:19

What "powers that be" did he contact? That sounds very odd to me, sorry.
