to be totally fucked off at my manager

MTBMummy · 25/10/2013 14:07

I have a slightly tainted view of him already as we don't get on, and since managing me for the last 6 months we've had a number of clashes so I may be over reacting.

he's recently been diagnosed with bronchitis, I know this not because he was good enough to tell me (19 weeks pregnant and an asthma sufferer) but because I saw him googling it, then heard him telling another team member. I have asked him directly and he says it's just a smokers cough (ffs he's been coughing his guts up for over a month now and making everyone else sick)

I know exactly why he won't admit it to me, I already work 1 day a week from home (approved by my previous manager) and he hates it, he's said as much, but also admitted he can't change it as it was agreed and he's only a temporary manager. So in his view, any excuse for me to say I'm doing more days from home would be unacceptable in his view.

So am I well within my rights to be totally fucked off that he's risking my health because he's too petty to either let me work a few days from home, or to pig headed to take time off and get better

I didnt think bronchitis caused by smoking was contagious?
sounds like you are pissed off by the constant coughing, and him not letting you work from home more than you do already.

gordyslovesheep · 25/10/2013 14:22

i think you are over reacting

Kewcumber · 25/10/2013 14:23

I've never heard of anyone "catching" bronchitis but am willing to be proven wrong.

pictish · 25/10/2013 14:23

How is he risking your health? Confused
It's not contagious.

Sallykitten · 25/10/2013 14:24

I don't think that you can reasonably request that you not be in the office while pregnant any time any other member of staff has an illness.

If you genuinely believe there is a serious risk speak to your HR dept.

CaptainSweatPants · 25/10/2013 14:25

Sounds like you don't like him

YDdraigGoch · 25/10/2013 14:25

Agree with other posters. I bet there are loads of contagious people in the office that you don't know about. And do you go shopping in supermarkets? Loads of germies there too.
You're being a bit precious IMO.

HellYeah3 · 25/10/2013 14:25

You need to catch a grip. He does not have to tell you. His medical history is confidential and quite frankly none of your business.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 25/10/2013 14:26

Actually I think it is contagious (according to Dr Google)

aturtlenamedmack · 25/10/2013 14:26

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronchitis
Bronchitis itself isn't contagious.
Acute bronchitis develops from other illnesses such as a cold or flu - which can be caught.
Chronic bronchitis (smokers cough) can't be caught and develops over a long period of time.
He isn't risking your health.

Sidge · 25/10/2013 14:26

What are you on about?

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchus. It is not a contagious disease. His health issues are confidential and he is not obliged to inform you of them.

pictish · 25/10/2013 14:26

You can't expect to get more working from home days because someone in the office has a cough you know.

GhouldenGreen · 25/10/2013 14:26

Actually bronchitis is often caused by a virus so he probably did start off being contagious - but if he has been coughing like this for a month I would say it's probably not contagious anymore.

aturtlenamedmack · 25/10/2013 14:27

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronchitis
link that works!

CoffeeTea103 · 25/10/2013 14:28

Yabu, are you implying that you want more work days at home? He doesn't need to let you know his medical conditions.

HellYeah3 · 25/10/2013 14:30

Just out of interest do you think everyone should get to work at home or do you think you should be the only one who gets that privilege?

MTBMummy · 25/10/2013 14:30

I'm happy to be told I'm BU, Dr Google said it was contagious - so will sit down and shut up.

To be honest if he went home and got better I'd count that as just as good as me getting a couple of work from home days, just fed up with everyone coughing all over me constantly, and really don't want to get sick again, ended up in bed for a week last year due to catching some virus which affected my asthma.

HellYeah3 · 25/10/2013 14:32

Why should he though if he feels well enough to work just because you find his coughing an inconvenience? Or maybe he can't afford to take time of.

pictish · 25/10/2013 14:32

You don't like him do you?

Tweasels · 25/10/2013 14:33

I'm confused. Do you want to be able to work from home because he is ill?

Or do you think he should be off work?

Neither are reasonable btw as it's not contagious Grin

Tweasels · 25/10/2013 14:34

Sorry x-post

Tweasels · 25/10/2013 14:37

I think when you're pregnant you do sometimes feel like you just want to wrap yourself in cotton wool until the baby arrives and it probably makes you a bit irrational. You just need to get a bit of perspective sometimes.

You can't blame other people for being unwell, that's bonkers.

judgejudithjudy · 25/10/2013 14:46

yabu & precious, first pregnancy by any chance? what next? lady in the co-op not allowed to go to work if she has a cough incase you catch it? sounds like youre jealous of your boss!

MTBMummy · 25/10/2013 15:05

Nope - second pregnancy, but was suspected of getting swine flu with DD, which is something I never want to repeat.

Basically my view is if you're contagious, work from home and don't make others ill, if you refuse to do so, those who don't want to catch your lurgy should be given that option.

But as I said happy to be told IABU - and I've been told Grin
