to be worried and angry about ads for horror movies everywhere

A few streets away there is a phone box; its v close to a nursery and a primary school.
Its currently covered with an ad for some godawful horror film and has big red letters simulating 'scrawled in blood' which spell "YOU'RE NEXT".
A few months ago it had another ad for another horror film which was a big zombie/skull face, the size of the phone box.
What the fuck is going on?
My 2 ds are too little to read but i actually worry more about the sadistic and extreme nature of horror films than internet porn, when they get older.
I push them past these ads in their pram and of course they clock it so what the fuck can their little minds be thinking?! Aibu to worry about the prevelance of such frightening images (and about the whole nature of horror films in general 'these days')
Will take it on chin if mums of older kids tell me not to sweat this...

I think a kids imagination can make anything scary.....the childcatcher from chitty chitty bang bang scared my dd's more than horror film images

also,we cant make the whole world revolve around small children, cant see how that could be done

what about the news? radio and tv. and newspaper images?

ALittleBitOfHalloweenMagic · 25/10/2013 14:56

I absolutely hate horror films and I hate watching tv late at night because of the adverts . I'm completely scared shitless horrified at them . Dh loves them and thinks I'm a wimp .

Anyway I agree they are not allowed to show them on tv before a certain time so I don't get how they are allowed to plaster them over streets Hmm

mrsjay · 25/10/2013 15:04

there was an advert for the film the conjurer that came on one night I jumped out of my skin my dh laughed at me arse

mrsjay · 25/10/2013 15:05

Exactly I know they need to promote their films and all that but sometimes the poster is a bit much

kali110 · 25/10/2013 16:29

Think yabu. Not everybody think their children are more important than everyonelse.
I wouldnt ruin things for others.
If i jump out of my skin at things then children would notice my reaction to it. Im terrified of spiders as my mum is only because of her reaction to them.
I was bought up watching lots of probably inappropriate films but definitely didnt scar me or warp my mind.
Personally i love the youre next poster.

paperdress · 25/10/2013 16:54

Fuckit. Must stop constantly thinking children are more important than everyone else and must stop jumping out of my skin all the bloody time.
Phew

Yes paperdress, you don't want to ruin things for those who want to look at scary images in the street, just to protect children.

Kali110 maybe it did affect you if you don't have a problem with children being exposed to inappropriate images.

A letter from banksy

People are taking the piss out of you everyday. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.

  • Banksy

You don't have to put up with it.

Lollydaydream · 25/10/2013 18:34

YANBU they are threatening and unnecessary. I don't see how removing them is spoiling things for other people or child centric . I don't like seeing them as an adult they creep me out and stick in my mind for day and there are plenty of other spaced they could be advertised in.

Strumpetron · 25/10/2013 18:37

YABU, we can't censor and child proof everything. I do however think they shouldn't be allowed within a certain vicinity of a primary school.

adeucalione · 25/10/2013 18:47

The ASA can act after receiving even a single complaint, and have done so (Final Destination 5 posters were removed for example), so I would suggest calling them.

kali110 · 25/10/2013 18:49

Yes def affected me, im not terrified of horror films or posters. Certainly dont show if im scared of anything in front of the kids so they dont pick up on it.
Everybody thinks their kids are the most important, but others dont. Some people dont choose to have children. They are just as important.
Without trailers and posters how else do films get advertised.

AntoinetteCosway · 25/10/2013 18:55

I hate it OP. I also hate the bloody buses in York advertising. The Dungeons that have pictures of severed heads and people about to be executed. They make me feel sick.

Littleredsquirrel · 25/10/2013 18:59

Films ca be advertised without showing these images to children. They always were in the past. It is unnecessary.

Wallison · 25/10/2013 19:09

I'm with you OP. I really really like horror films as well, but I don't see why these images should be blared around in public for the sake of making money. Even normal billboards don't add anything to the environment and are intrusive. When you add to that the extra dimension that some images are actually intended to be unpleasant and/or threatening, then it to my mind crosses the line between not being of public use to actual public detriment. Write to your council - see if you can persuade others to do the same.

ScarletLady02 · 25/10/2013 19:16

I was all ready to say YABU to be perfectly honest, but after reading that letter from Banksy I've changed my mind. He's right. So many adverts piss me off....the horror ones don't even register on my radar but if people don't like them then it's their right not to....we don't have any choice BUT to see this stuff, so if you feel that strongly about it then do something.

mrsjay · 25/10/2013 19:18

the poster who pointed out that the final destination was removed after a complaint really enlightened me I didnt know that OP complain about the poster, I am sure a bra poster advertisement was removed after complaints too,

southeastastra · 25/10/2013 19:22

it would teach them the appropriate use of the apostrophe in 'you're'

kali110 · 25/10/2013 19:53
