To think that very overweight people on telly should actually wear clothes?

I was watching 70 stone man last night. The guy had no clothes on all programme. Why was this man denied any scrap of dignity by not being covered? Do people who are really struggling at this level of obesity, genuinely not cover up with anything even a sheet or was this some programme editors decision to titilate the audience? This isn't the first time that I have seen people of this sort of size completely naked on telly. AIBU in thinking that he should have told his story whilst covered?

Maybe its hard to find clothes that fit.
Being overweight and overheated.

Who knows. The person in the program was an adult who could have chosen to be clothed if he wanted to be. I can't see a producer insisting someone not wear them if they wanted to.

Quite a lot of these programmes with very overweight people show them just sitting there naked.

Especially on the 'feeder' documentaries.

I've always wondered if (and no offense meant) that they don't see the excess weight as part of them. Maybe they feel 'covered up' because they're covered by the extra weight.

Does that make sense?

ShatnersEmptyCatacomb · 24/10/2013 20:21

Think of the logistics of clothing a massive person. They don't ask them to strip of so we can get a better look.

Sirzy · 24/10/2013 20:22

Surely he was only being denied dignity if he was being made to appear naked against his will or without being able to properly consent?

UsedToBeNDP · 24/10/2013 20:24

ALL PEOPLE ON TELEVISION SHOULD WEAR CLOTHES

thehorridestmumintheworld · 24/10/2013 20:25

I know these people are adults and can make their own decisions, but there is something a bit exploitative about these type of programmes.

carabos · 24/10/2013 20:26

I wondered about that too. That poor man was in such a terrible state, they could at least have found a gown or something for him.

jellymaker · 24/10/2013 20:29

That's what worries me about it. Seeing him naked all the way through just seemed slightly odd tbh.

YANBU. Even if it's hard to find clothes that size, it's possible to have some made or even cover up with a sheet. Everyone of a lower weight would be shown clothed so I agree the largest among us should also be given the same dignity.

I think the availability of clothes for that size. The fact he would probably be hot anyway and the sheer physical effort of trying to get someone that size into clothes would make it virtually impossible

Backinthering · 25/10/2013 10:21

I think if you're at the stage of needing help just to move position in bed, actually getting clothing on would be a logistical nightmare even assuming something could be found to fit.
But yes those programmes have a distasteful sense of freak show/titillation to them.

KatoPotato · 25/10/2013 10:24

Hmmmm... Agree with PP that the logistics of clothing such an extreme case can't be easy for him or for a production team.

Though I have wondered about this on 'Fat, a year to save my life' Every participant is filmed at the start in their underwear and taking a shower.

I think personally that If I knew that footage was 'in the can' I'd work even harder to get a better result?

FlapJackOLantern · 25/10/2013 10:40

He couldn't roll over, sit up, or lift his legs. How the hell do you think he could get clothes on?? Many times he was covered by a sheet in the programme.

Fakebook · 25/10/2013 12:04

I feel sorry for these people. It's sad they have no one who cares enough to cover them up or find a way of covering them up for a bit of dignity. If I had an overweight person in my family I'd buy fabric myself and get someone to sew it into a big moomoo type thing or just do it myself.
