I've just realised something weird - my leccy company, Scottish Power said that my useage was £100 or so a month and wanted me to pay more than that regularly 'to save up for the autumn and winter'.

Since I had a pre-pay put in a week ago, I have been using tumble dryer, washing machine etc if anything more than usual, and I still have £5 credit left from a £10 starter! So where does that 'you use £25 a week as a baseline throughout the year' come from?? Just shows doesn't it..

Ooh, I have always been scared of putting a pre-pay in as I've just imagined running out of money and electricity in the first week of the month and being stuck for the rest of it!

I shall have to investigate thoroughly now...

i'm in a 3storey townhouse with 5 beds....pre pay here too. £15 a week goes on it,and we rarely run out (also paying off an old debt from last house,so £3a week comes off automatically for that)

you are all being had!

I suppose it depends how much electricity you are actually using. Your usual amount of wash loads may be a fraction of what I do.

FWIW, £25 a week in my meter would see me through all year round if I actually put £25 in every week.

What tends to happen is that I put in a certain amount, then wait until that is low before putting in more, so I top up less in summer.

My heating is all electric. I am already dreading topping up my meter over winter. I haven't turned the heating on yet, as I know it will gobble up my credits.
