To not understand this craze for Christmas pyjamas

Why are xmas pjs so the done thing? I have just been following the xmas eve hamper thread and it seems the two often go hand in hand.

Are they Christmas themed pjs or just general ones? And what happens to the stockpile of previous pjs? I have visions of bulging wardrobes adorned with designs of santas and sleighs from years gone by.

Does anyone go for matching pjs?

PS I am not the pyjama troll

My DD's get new jammies to wear Christmas Eve ready for Santa to visit. They are not Christmas themed. DD1 8.9yrs at Christmas will be getting 1D jammies and DD2 who will turn 2 at Christmas will have Peppa Pig jammies.
They also get a Christmas bath bomb from Lush each.

It's a tradition I started when I had DD1 as my parents never did it and neither did the in-laws for DH.

dd who is 7 is desperate for these horse print pj's so they may be the xmas eve ones this year. www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Girls-1H-12yrs-Nightwear/Pyjamas/34149/Girls-1H-12yrs-Pretty-Woven-Pyjama-Set.html?NavGroupID=8#next

my DDS have jammies on Christmas Eve- not themed just new. And so did I as a child, so I don't think it's a new fashion. But I am somewhat troubled by the excess pjs- not for dd1 she outgrows hers, but dd2 has both her new pairs and her hand me downs. In fact, judge me if you will, Christmas pajamas, knickers and socks are the only new clothes I have ever bought dd2, so she probably deserves them.

QuenellefireAndDamnation · 23/10/2013 12:16

I've always assumed the original idea of Christmas pyjamas was to tempt the children to go to bed nice and early (or at least get ready for bed) on a night when they're bound to be overexcited.

Lilicat1013 · 23/10/2013 12:31

I get Christmas pyjamas, they don't have to be Christmas themed, my older son's ones for this year were going to have sharks on them.

I have changed my mind though as I have seen some cute penguin ones and he loves penguins. He is a size 3-4 now so I got them a size 4-5. They will be on the large side for him now, he wont really be in to a 4-5 till his birthday (March) and will stay in that size till his next birthday.

So he will wear his penguin pyjamas from December till it gets warm enough for summer pyjamas then all next winter. When he grows out of them they will be packed away to eventually get passed on to his brother.

His brother is having Christmas babygros, he will wear them till he outgrows them (so only two to three months of use), they will be packed away till next winter and then either be passed on to a friend with a baby or sold on eBay.

I'm in my mid 40's. When I was a little girl my granny used to buy me a new nightie as a Christmas present. We would go to Midnight Mass and then be allowed to open on present before bed. It was always Granny's present and it was lovely to go to bed in a new nightie. Smile

My mum carries on the tradition - she sends money to me and my siblings and we buy for our children (and grandchildren in some cases). We go to church on Christmas Eve and come home and open Nanna's present.

I don't buy special Christmas themed ones though and I don't do a hamper.

OneUp · 23/10/2013 12:34

I'm only getting my little one new pyjamas she needs anyway as she's grown out of tons of pyjamas. It just happens this pair have penguins on because she loves penguins and Pingu.

JoannaBaxterLovesBumsex · 23/10/2013 12:38

We've never done the pyjama thing. The family videos are fab with everyone hanging around unwrapping presents in their pants and teeshirts. Makes a good christmas methinks.

mrsjay · 23/10/2013 12:40

I love getting new PJs for christmas present i get into them christmas night as soon as i get home from mums and let the dinner settle andget pissed as a fart I dont do christmas eve rubbish though I love new Pyjamas as do the dds I am easily pleased

mrsjay · 23/10/2013 12:42

thewoolybackswife that is lovely [smile]@you in your nana jamars.

I dont do Christmas themes either just new PJs

Fleta · 23/10/2013 12:43

We do new PJs, not Christmas ones.

Last year we had gorgeous red checked ones.

forceslover · 23/10/2013 13:48

We always had new pjs for Xmas as children and I have done the same with my family. The Xmas fairy comes at bath time and every one is nice and snugly and ready for bed. Just a family tradition that is lovely!

Sleepyhead33 · 23/10/2013 15:25

e always had new pjs on Christmas Eve when I was young-30years ago!
It was so that we looked presentable in the photos taken on Christmas morning of us opening our presents!

I have carried on the tradition with my two (not Christmas themed pjsthough, just new ones).

LateBear · 23/10/2013 15:31

Ooh I want some! I grew up in the Southern Hemisphere so too hot for Christmas pjs at Christmas!

cashmiriana · 23/10/2013 17:30

We have always had new pyjamas on Christmas Eve. They are rarely Christmas themed - though I remember DD2 having reindeer ones when she was about 3. It is something my parents did with me when I was little.

One year, DSis and I had green pyjamas with arrows on them and the words Texas State Prison on the front. WTF were my (usually very normal and nice) parents thinking?

ColderThanAWitchsTitty · 23/10/2013 17:34

We used to get xmas pajamas.. Not new!

SatinSandals · 23/10/2013 18:23

I had never heard of it before MN.

Cadsuane · 23/10/2013 19:11

We always got new pajamas for Christmas. The only thing I do different is that I wrapped them up and put them under the tree to be opened on Christmas Eve. Not usually Christmas themed although for a few years we bought them from Primark and the had things like penguins, snowflakes, polar bears.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 23/10/2013 19:17

Oh man, Cadsuane! Between you and NynaevesSister I'm getting serious kicks off some of the names on here lately Grin

But wrt Christmas pyjamas, I'm considering onsies for the three dc this year (and for me!) to put on Christmas Eve. DD already has one and DS1 has asked for one already.

Going with nordic ones from Asda though, so they can be worn through the winter.

PeppermintScreams · 23/10/2013 19:28

DS is another one of these strange children who grow out of pyjamas on a yearly basis.

I normally pick him some character pyjamas to wear on Christmas Eve that I know he'll love instead of the cheapy Asda ones he has the rest of the year. I normally buy the next size up so they'll last until the following Christmas.

When he was a baby they were winter themed not Christmas.

We always got this growing up, every Xmas day one of our stocking presents was guaranteed to be pyjamas, another was guaranteed to be slippers. Never Xmas themed thankfully.

Last year was the first year I didn't get them.

But will probably be carrying on the tradition for DC, mostly because it was something my mum started.

jellyboatsandpirates · 24/10/2013 11:26

We've never done this. Christmas pyjamas? Why? Oh, and do you mean actual Christmas pyjamas with Rudolph on or just pyjamas for Christmas?!
Although I must say I do like the idea of Christmas jumpers. I can just see us all now in cheesy Christmas jumpers.
DH can have a Father Christmas one, me a Rudolph and the kids a snowman one. Grin

AmIGoingMad · 24/10/2013 11:31

My sisters and I always had new pjs on Christmas Eve. Not themed one just new ones.

It's a tradition I've continued with DS, DH and myself and will do with dd when she's big enough!

nf1morethanjustlumpsandbumps · 24/10/2013 11:37

Its tradition in our family for new PJ's for Christmas Eve never Christmas themed though. DS is allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve and so far he hasn't caught on to the fact its always new PJ's. My parents always did do for me but DH thinks its weird.
