to ask your opinion on this? (Wedding gift list related)

Just wanted some advice on this scenario:

So you receive an invite. You decide you want to buy a gift, however are unsure of what to buy.

So you contact to ask. The couple would like you to cook your favorite recipe for them & write the recipe down for them. Not for the wedding food. Just for them to take home.

Thoughts please?

I really really fancy a S&V and cheddar sandwich now. Drat you mildred.

steppemum · 22/10/2013 23:25

I still think the idea of the recipes is a great one.

You could make it recipe plus a date when they will cook it for you?
I have also heard of - give us a copy of your favourite book, or your favourite album.

I like these because they are personal and inexpensive. I do hate the whole wedding present thing.

Oh - one was give us a bottle of your favourite wine, put your names on the label and we will drink it during our first year and remember all our lovely guests. I think they got some seriously expensive, nice bottles!

HorryIsUpduffed · 22/10/2013 23:37

Ooh those wine/CD/book suggestions are just lovely.

I mentioned Scrabble on the other thread, but you could also put "pack of cards" on your list. I think people do like to bring a present so a list is a good idea otherwise you get Auntie Gladys bringing you an absolutely hideous casserole dish that even the charity shop doesn't want but having personal or cheap items on it makes people feel warmly towards you.

OP google 'taste book' - sorry I am rubbish at links.

Its a way of collecting recipes - one of my friends organised it for a 40th birthday present. An email link is circulated and people add their recipe with a message / photographs, add comments / jokes to personalise it. When everyones done it, the company prints it all off, puts it in a personalised folder type thing.

Its fab, so personal and funny / poignant. Have texted friends when i've made their recipe, taken it round whenwe've visited.

HTH

IfIDontKnowAndYouDontKnow · 22/10/2013 23:46

steppemum Those ideas are fab!

Horry Yes, I think I'll do that then.

So I guess the general vote is just the recipes? How do I ask/ phase this?

Posted on your other thread too about combining a recipe book with a guest book so you'd have the recipe from each person/couple stuck in with their nice drunken best wishes scribbled underneath.

IfIDontKnowAndYouDontKnow · 22/10/2013 23:54

Yes, just answered you on there Horry I think thats fab!

Mandy Its a great little idea & the website has some interesting books. I think for us to purchase it with all the extra pages etc though is going to be too much for us.

personally, i think its a bit strange, gow are they going to keep all the food fresh before they go home?

i think it's a nice idea but i'd be inclined to do a nice basket or parcel or cooking dish containing recipe card and non-perishable ingredients, maybe a small voucher for supermarket so they can buy the rest

i really love the idea of the favourite book gift, i love reading and always find it hard to choose books for myself.

just need to find a groom nowGrin

IfIDontKnowAndYouDontKnow · 23/10/2013 00:40

KCucumber Update: the couple are me & DH. Was just sounding out peoples opinions. General vote is nice idea, but just the recipe, not the actual food. AM going to go with that and just ask for guests to bring their fave recipe with them so I can stick it into a nice book with Congratulation notes etc.

OP posts:
ColderThanAWitchsTitty · 23/10/2013 00:57

yes to the recipes, no to the actually carrying around obscene amounts of food

ColderThanAWitchsTitty · 23/10/2013 00:57

or add a load of really nice cookbooks to an actual list (and I know MN thinks gift lists are the devil but they really aren#t!)
