to think it takes less than an hour and a half to cook a spag bol?

I'm 12 weeks pregnant, and also have a massive work deadline this week that means I'm sat at home writing reports tonight. Therefore DH is on tea duty.

An hour and a half ago he decided we would have slag bol for tea. This was after spending twenty minutes playing with the cat while making that decision. He then proceeded to change his outfit ("it's cold, and I have to go to the shop to get cheese"), came back from said shop with multiple items he didn't go for (including a six pack of coca-cola, which I can't even drink being over my caffeine limit for today), and then went into the kitchen. I assumed that meant he was starting cooking.

One hour later, he comes into the living room and asks which sort of pasta I'd prefer. Honestly at this point I don't care whether it's bows or twists. I'm pregnant, grumpy, and not eating regularly seems to trigger my morning sickness. I just want spag bol. I don't even know what he's done for the last hour. Would it be unreasonable to leave the bastard/order takeaway on his bank card?

To cook a proper ragu sauce takes that long yes. But that's not what he was doing is it? He was piddling around wasting time - I can get a spag bol on the table in 20 minutes flat if pushed. So no, YANBU to give his card details to the local take away Grin

Justforlaughs · 22/10/2013 22:29

I'd order takeaway and eat both!
or you could keep the spag bol for tomorrow
or eat the takeaway and tip the spag bol on his head Wink

HeadsDownThumbsUp · 22/10/2013 22:30

Not if you want good spag bol. That needs to be stirred and simmered.

A simple tomato based pasta? Fine.

Loshad · 22/10/2013 22:31

YABVU, of course the sauce needs to cook for at least one hour.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 22/10/2013 22:31

I always start my spag bol the day before, but yes if pushed he should have made it by now.

Order takeaway and eat the bolognaise tomorrow, it will taste better.

Boardingblues · 22/10/2013 22:32

YABU! He is cooking FFS, don't complain!

BunnyLebowski · 22/10/2013 22:34

YABU.

Proper ragu needs to be cooked slowly.

My mum used to make bolognese in half an hour. It was always watery and tasteless.

Don't get me started on her serving the sauce in the centre of a circle of spaghetti Hmm

RedlipsAndSlippers · 22/10/2013 22:34

Cooking for me while pregnant DP is very aware that spag bol should only take half an hour, any other time an hour and a half would be fine, but only if that time is being spent actually cooking it, not faffing around!
My grandpa takes three days to make his spag Bol, so worth it though...drool....

Salmotrutta · 22/10/2013 22:34

"An hour and a half ago he decided we woul have slag Bol for tea"

Hahahahaha

Luckypaws · 22/10/2013 22:35

Shoot him

sarahtigh · 22/10/2013 22:35

if you want pasta with sauce YANBU
if you want proper spag bol YABU as it takes ages, 2-3 hours to do sauce properly

Salmotrutta · 22/10/2013 22:35

I made spag Bol tonight.

I didn't rinse the mince though.

ACatCalledBrian · 22/10/2013 22:35

I would agree if it were a proper sauce, however this is a jarred sauce, a packet of mince and some slightly wrinkled mushrooms.

Also I really love heated-up leftover pasta, so this is looking like a good plan.

IHaveA · 22/10/2013 22:35

My spag Bol is fabulous and it takes about half an hour maximum. Most of that is slow cooking the onions.

ACatCalledBrian · 22/10/2013 22:36

Slag bol. Oops. No slags were harmed in the making of our tea, I promise.

Yabu it would take me at least 90mins including a hours simmering time, preferably longer. You skimp on simmering time and your meat is sort of tough & not cooked into the sauce. It's not nice.

Yanbu tho about being pregnant & needing to eat regularly. I hope you got take out Smile

HeadsDownThumbsUp · 22/10/2013 22:41

I don't understand jarred sauce for spag bol. Isn't it just passata + some salt, pepper and herbs. How is that a time saver?

Agree that the part that it's important to take time over is getting the meat all soft and melty, with wine and milk.

Gileswithachainsaw · 22/10/2013 22:42

A aah but was it edible?

mamalovebird · 22/10/2013 22:44

My record is 17 minutes and it always tastes lovely (not watery and/or tasteless) Normally around 30 mins though.

If DH was doing it, he'd spend 30mins just gagging and 'working out his timings' :)

mamalovebird · 22/10/2013 22:45

Not gagging, faffing!

GoldenGytha · 22/10/2013 22:49

We had spaghetti bolognese tonight (Loathe Spag Bol)

It took me half an hour, but then I always use a jar of sauce, can't be bothered with the faff of making the sauce myself.

Oldraver · 22/10/2013 23:02

Isnt the whole point of a jarred sauce is that it can be whipped up in no time less than an hour and half ?

Have you eaten yet ?

ACatCalledBrian · 22/10/2013 23:40

Well, I can report back. It wasn't the worst spag bol I've had, but it was almost devoid of taste (and any mushrooms, what he did with those is yet another mystery). Unfortunately it became ready just as I announced my takeaway ultimatum.

He has, however, offered kindly to pour me a glass of wine to make up for it Hmm

17 minutes is impressive mamalovebird I reckon from decision to serving mine with a jarred sauce is maybe 30 minutes.

HorryIsUpduffed · 22/10/2013 23:42

I prefer bolognese the day after, tbh.

But yes, he was being a twat and should have come back from the shop with fish & chips all hot and fluffy in the paper.

BeCool · 22/10/2013 23:46

Gosh I remember that hunger when I was PG - P was a very slow cool too.

But spaghetti Bol needs a proper reduction and simmer. Best you get a take away and reheat the spaghetti Bol tomorrow
