I never did trick or treat. And neither did DH. I am not old - mid 40's.

AIBU to think that its a money making excuse by the Supermarkets to extract more money from us?

I don't give a damn about "normalising the occult" but really it is all so TEDIOUS. Get so fed up with all the tat in shops. Stupid witch costumes and pumpkins, etc. Want it all to go away.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 22/10/2013 20:27

Halloween is fun.

I'm in my 40's - we went 'trick or treating' - and gasp - without parental hovering supervision. Dressed in costumes we made ourselves.

It's more commercial now - bring it on I say. £10 for a costume, bloody bargain!

Don't join in if you don't want to - but quit moaning and trying to bring everyone down with you fgs.

isitsnowingyet · 22/10/2013 20:27

We love Halloween - it's, well, FUN!

Oh, yes, I'm American, and Halloween was always much more fun and better in the good old US of A back in the day Smile

Crowler · 22/10/2013 20:27

I love it, but unfortunately the hooligans in our neighborhood spoil it for everyone.

Screamqueen · 22/10/2013 20:31

Hmm my kids will be dressed batman and a bear. Please tell me when should I expect them to start slaughtering goats?

Hahaha Grin

This is the second thread like this Ive saw this year, Im sure it will only increase as Halloween approaches. Why cant you Halloween haters and miseries just accept some people actually like it, its fun. No-ones forcing you to like it or buy stuff from the supermarkets, all the more left for people like me! My giant talking spooky butler goes down a treat at the window every year!

Screamqueen · 22/10/2013 20:32

Ooh this is new.

Halloween Grin
DadOnIce · 22/10/2013 20:32

Being told "it's fun" makes it even worse. Makes it sound like state-sponsored, licensed holiday camp style "fun". I prefer to create my own fun rather than be told what sort I can have. And I have always hated "dressing up", from infant school nativity onwards...

AnaisHellWitch · 22/10/2013 20:33

ChippinIn I completely agree regarding the costumes. I have thanked the supermarkets many times over during the short lives of my children. I can't imagine having the time to make the effort my parents had to Shock

DontmindifIdo · 22/10/2013 20:34

oh and I do have friends from Yorkshire who said there used to be a tradition of another night at the end of October start of November (not Halloween, can't remember exactly when, just that is wasn't Halloween), when it had become a tradition of 'mischief night' so cars were pelted with eggs and flour etc. I remember asking if it was trick or treaters and she was quite clear, there was no asking for anything, it was basically just all carnage and the police insisited on eggs and flour only being sold to over 18s for a few weeks. Most parents had grown up doing this so she said they tend to just buy stuff for their DCs, put their cars in the garage and hope for the best. Seemed very odd in comparasion.

I guess lots of odd little traditions from across the UK that all blended into what became the Halloween tradition.

Screamqueen · 22/10/2013 20:36

dadonice that's up to you but we create our own fun to around it, hows that "being told", mmm.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 22/10/2013 20:36

I love Halloween, which was brought to the new world by my Scottish and Irish ancestors. Halloween Grin Halloween Smile Halloween Wink

eightandthreequarters · 22/10/2013 20:37

Yes, indeed, YABU. Christmas is expensive. Halloween is cheap and bucketloads of fun.

DontmindifIdo · 22/10/2013 20:37

Bualou - make parkin

specialsubject · 22/10/2013 20:37

not finding exactly the same thing as other people fun does not mean someone is boring. Saying that those who don't follow the crowd are boring is the sign of intolerance.

the 'trick or treat piss off no thanks' poster will be up in my window as usual. Go beg somewhere else.

eightandthreequarters · 22/10/2013 20:39

Poor DadonIce! Do you feel forced to have 'fun' on birthdays and Xmas as well? It's a conspiracy and no doubt.

WestieMamma · 22/10/2013 20:40

My parents used to fill our heads with tales of the horrors that keeping the lantern lit kept away. Then later we'd be sent to bed ... but with no lit lantern Shock. I used to lie in bed absolutely terrified. I hated halloween.

eightandthreequarters · 22/10/2013 20:40

There needs to be a Halloween equivalent of bah-humbug. Anyone?

ditavonteesed · 22/10/2013 20:43

favourite mischeif night trick was to tie the door handle of terraced houses together, you know the ones where the doors are opposite each other in an alley and the back door and garden are enclosed, meaning the residents could essentially not get out. didnt quite realise how bad that was, and people were not given an option to take part. Trick or treat much nicer.

FixItUpChappie · 22/10/2013 20:49

Well I think....oh...sorry, I can't participate. I've already completed my detailed defense of Halloween post for the year. I'll just stick my tongue out at you and observe that many of you in the UK don't get it and likely never will.

Paintingrainbowskies · 22/10/2013 20:49

YABU

Halloween is not americanised shite, it's a tradition round these (Scottish) parts. I'm 33 and Halloween was such a big deal, particularly guising.

My Gran is 87 and used to go guising as a child.

bubalou · 22/10/2013 20:53

Dontmindifido - thank you I will - they look awesome! Wink

500internalerror · 22/10/2013 20:55

I love the spookiness.
I love the decorations.
I love the scary sound effects & themed party.

But I will never never let my kids knock on the door of strangers to ask for something for nothing. It's really bloody cheeky! Can you imagine doing that at Xmas, for example?

SolidGoldBrass · 22/10/2013 21:03

Oh goodie, it's whinyarse season again.

AnaisHellWitch · 22/10/2013 21:04

I had the amazing idea from one of these threads years ago to surprise trick or treaters with a shop-bought hairy werewolef hand through the letterbox then opening the door to this:

Halloween Shock Halloween Shock Halloween Shock

It never gets old!

ColderThanAWitchsTitty · 22/10/2013 21:04

no one is stopping you from all the fun you would have otherwise it isn't an either/or situation you do realise?

and you do sound like a hoot
