To think that DH is a massive spoilsport?

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 22/10/2013 17:03

This morning I bought two medium sized pumpkins for the purpose of carving at the weekend, in the traditional (albeit somewhat American) sense of Halloween. Halloween Smile

DH has a big thing about food waste. He will not throw leftovers out and we have countless bits of tupperware clogging up the freezer. 99.9% of the time, I respect this about him and we go to great lengths to plan meals carefully and only shop for what we will use.

Now. As far as I'm concerned, it's ok to use a pumpkin for carving purposes once a fricking year especially as we'll roast the seeds for munchies. DH on the other hand is horrified at wasting the flesh of the pumpkin and refuses to have anything to do with the carving festivities at the weekend.

AIBU to think he's a huge spoilsport and want him to unclench for this one occasion?

YANBU at all. It's all very admiral and all that but jeez its ONCE A YEAR!

Cityofgold · 22/10/2013 17:08

YANBU.

Pumpkin in this sense is not food, it is a toy. If he rally wants he can take the used Pumpkin lanterns to the local recycling centre to be composted once Halloween is over. At least that way, unlike most other toys, they will be recycled.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/10/2013 17:08

You're using the seeds and carving pumpkins aren't really for eating anyway. HIBU.

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 22/10/2013 17:09

Why don't you do something with the flesh?

Bunnygotwhacked · 22/10/2013 17:09

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4777/halloween-pumpkin-cake
give him this to use up the pumpkin and let him get on with it

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 22/10/2013 17:10

you could offer him the flesh to make soup with, see how strong his principles are. Smile

Venushasrisen · 22/10/2013 17:11

I have been reliably informed that they are for Halloween decoration and not for eating.

Mrsdonalddraper · 22/10/2013 17:11

YANBU - I'm sure I read somewhere that the carving pumpkins are just that - for carving and their flesh isn't much good (nutritionally)

disclaimer - I'm weaning dd at the moment so that info could have been in the context of pfb purées

And yes - it's once a year!

Duckegg80 · 22/10/2013 17:11

Make pumpkin soup? Although I do think he could lighten up, given the once a year, fun for the kids factor!

Tanfastic · 22/10/2013 17:12

Jesus he would do my head in op sorry!

I would go ahead, carve the pumpkins and give him the residue to rustle up a pumpkin pie or whatever.

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 22/10/2013 17:13

My friend made pumpkin pie one year, it was gross. I think you need the sweetened tinned American pumpkin for that , not the flesh of a Halloween pumpkin .

Still18atheart · 22/10/2013 17:13

YY to making a soup out of the left overs. Did it once never again. Still a running joke in this family.

Top tip: Put in some lemon grappa water too for an extra kick/ to make sure he sees your reasoning Wink

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 22/10/2013 17:14

Thanks all. I didn't think I was BU!

Crumbs he sounds dour!

ICameOnTheJitney · 22/10/2013 17:18

Some shops mark them specifically as "carving" pumpkins...meaning they're coarse and not of eating quality. Tell him that the twat

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 22/10/2013 17:18

Hahahaha CaptainSweatPants in all other ways, he's brilliant fun. Food waste is just his pet hate.

He's now muttering under his breath about not being unreasonable and that Netmums would probably have agreed with him! Halloween Grin

AgentZigzag · 22/10/2013 17:29

Does he save them so he can make something, or he's saving them for you?

He's not being very nice to your DC though taking it out on them.

squeakytoy · 22/10/2013 17:43

pumpkin and bacon soup is lovely

JumpingJackSprat · 22/10/2013 17:47

Pumpkins taste disgusting. Yanbu.

AgentZigzag · 22/10/2013 17:48

Hahaha at Netmums agreeing with him Grin

Let us know what they say if tries them Grin

DrCoconut · 22/10/2013 19:04

I'm with him on this. The big pumpkins are perfectly edible and if you cook creatively can be delicious. We get a big pot of soup, a risotto and a pie out of ours.

lljkk · 22/10/2013 19:25

Why not carve & cook? Carve one day & cook the next. It's easy & very easy in the relatively cool British climate (pumpkin won't rot).

We eat our carving pumpkins. Pie etc.

FunkyBoldRibena · 22/10/2013 22:45

Unless it is bred for eating, it will be pretty evil. If it is a Sugar Pie pumpkin, do not... I repeat do not ...waste the flesh as it is the most divine pumpkin in the world. If it is from a supermarket then just compost the lot.

Mellowandfruitful · 22/10/2013 22:49

Pumpkin is dull, dull, dull to eat. Why doesn't he try cooking it and eating it all himself if he's that bothered?
