To think that independent schools subjected to the same level of scunity as state schools

State schools have to prove that their children are making progress. A school with excellent results can find itself in special measures if they are not tracking progess and all groups of children are making the progress they should. For example a grammar school is expected to do better than the comp.

I feel that private schools should be under the same scunity and have inspections with the same level of rigor as state schools. Parents should have access to value added data to decide if a school is worth the money. It seems to me a bit of a cop out that private schools can be inspected by the independent inspectorate rather than OFSTED.

but Private schools are a choice, not a legal requirement.

If a private school keels over the parents have the reources to go elsewhere
if a state school shuts, kids are stuffed

I guess the difference is that if i feel my boys school is not doing the best for them I can just take my children and money somewhere else.

Caitlin17 · 21/10/2013 22:37

Yes, agreed, not sure what the point would be.

PedlarsSpanner · 21/10/2013 22:43

private schools live and die by their exam results, surely? So poor teaching would give a bag of shite results, parents would snap shut their purses and trot off to another establishment, game over.

SuperStrength · 21/10/2013 22:46

So poorly paid taxpayers should fund inspections at private schools that they have no possibility of sending their children to?
If you want the rigour provided by the state system, choose to send your child to a state school.

IndridCold · 21/10/2013 22:49

What on earth is 'scunity'?

Willdoitinaminute · 21/10/2013 22:49

Independent Inspectorate are far more thorough than Ofsted. The inspection takes place over two separate visits, the first is almost a week long and all aspects of the school are inspected from the buildings & facilities to extended observation of individual teachers. Parents and pupils are asked to fill in questionnaires. Ofsted inspections seem to be a walk in the park in comparison.

ExitPursuedByABear · 21/10/2013 22:51

Why are you concerned about this?

ReallyTired · 21/10/2013 22:56

"So poorly paid taxpayers should fund inspections at private schools that they have no possibility of sending their children to? "

Private school parents are tax payers as well. There have been some threads recently where children have had utterly dire experiences at private schools. Education is more than just results.

Every child has a right to a high quality education. I feel that OFSTED is effective at raising standards.

OFSTED are paid to do assessments of the schools that the government pay for if parents at private school want the same then they can fund inspections it shouldn't come from the public purse.

Ha ha ha

Caitlin17 · 21/10/2013 23:08

I honestly don't see the need for this. We were very happy with son's school. He was there from age 4 in junior nursery to age 18 in 6th year.

During his time there we knew of children coming and children going. The ethos of the school was very inclusive of all children, not just pushing for high results, although saying that, it did get very good results.

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/10/2013 23:15

Certain parts of private schools are inspected by Ofsted for example boarding and EYFS.

When I was looking at schools I compared Ofsted and ISIS reports to me ISIS reports seemed considerably more detailed.
As others have said private schools live and die by their results. If they are not providing the correct service parents leave and the school closes.

ExitPursuedByABear · 21/10/2013 23:17

And of course those parents are paying for the education, and paying their taxes for state schools to be wafted round by ofsted.

BrokenSunglasses · 21/10/2013 23:24

I disagree that independent schools should be monitored in the same way as state.

I think it's ok for parents that have chosen private education to monitor it themselves. They are taxpayers, and if they want to access the resources their taxes pay for then they can do it through the state system. The only exception to that I can think of is where a child in a private school would benefit from state special needs services.
