AIBU to hate competitions & fundraisers about gluttony and wasting food?

This is brought on by item in local paper about a food outlet challenging readers to eat their 48oz burger, in a 10 inch roll, with cheese, bacon, sauce and chips - several willing chaps turned up for the challenge, no one could manage more than about half.

what a waste of food. what a dreadful attitude to eating healthily! how many calories were in that lot???

And these competitions you see where people die choking on their 99th hot dog in 5 minutes, or whatever, and these sponsored sit-in-a-bath-of-beans for Children in Need - why not just give the children the bloomin food.

It's a disgrace, especially when so many families are relying on foodbanks!!

I think you're right - slightly tasteless considering the food bank situation.

Is the 48 oz burger related to Children in Need?

Are the sponsored events actually depriving any child in need, or raising awareness/profile?

Sirzy · 21/10/2013 18:26

I agree. I also don't like the way things like that show eating as being about shovelling as much food in as quick as you can. It's horrible to watch.

Fakebook · 21/10/2013 18:27

Yanbu. I hate the whole "bath full of beans" charity fundraisers. What a waste of food.

CoffeeTea103 · 21/10/2013 18:28

Agree. There are so many other ways to raise awareness and be charitable. With all the obesity issues, it's hardly a way to encourage healthy eating as well

LaurieFairyCake · 21/10/2013 18:31

I'm sure you're right

However your opening post just made me want the giant burger Wink

complexnumber · 21/10/2013 18:32

It's horrible to watch.

I'll take your word for that, not having ever watched it.

phantomnamechanger · 21/10/2013 18:33

no the 48oz burger was not children in need but was a fundraiser -for a local charity - and of course, lots of nice publicity for the venue.

Yes there is good in supporting a charity, but there should be limits to what is in good taste (no pun intended),

The whole point of the challenge was to gorge on more food than is healthy in a whole DAY, and they must have expected there to be piles of waste. Not good when there is a soup kitchen and a food bank not that far away!

YANBU. There's a famous hot-dog eating contest in NYCNathan's at Coney Islandand I've long said it turns my stomach, both from a revolting perspective and for showing a lack of compassion for the many hungry kids in this city.

AfricanExport · 21/10/2013 19:08

Any food eating/wasting at that level, pure gluttony, turns my stomach.

I can't even stand a food fight. I think it's disgusting...

Famzilla · 21/10/2013 19:10

YANBU. Makes me cringe.

BrokenSunglasses · 21/10/2013 19:13

I'm not that keen on these things, but I can see why some would find it entertaining.

I don't think the food bank issue is at all relevant. People are going to food banks because of fuck ups with their benefits, not because there is a food shortage. Your post would have made more sense if you'd have said 'its a disgrace, especially when there are so many people dying of famine in Somalia'.

Mollydoggerson · 21/10/2013 19:33

I hate man v food, the gluttony I disgusting. Apparently the guy on it eats sparsely on the non-filming days and hits the treadmills, seems sp unhealthy overall. Bah humbug!

Mollydoggerson · 21/10/2013 19:34

sorry for typos, was being forced kissed by my 4 year old while typing.
