To think what a waste of pumpkins

LeGavrOrf · 21/10/2013 08:29

Loads of pumpkins for sale in supermarkets.

I don't want to come across as a miserable piece of shit but I think it's an incredible waste. All these pumpkins are grown to make lanterns with, and the flesh is thrown away (not that it would be worth eating as apparently Halloween pumpkins are vile). I bet the vast majority of people would just throw the flesh away anyway, even if it did taste nice.

Just seems mad to have all the resources dedicated to grow and distribute pumpkins in this day and age where people are skint and hungry and have to use food banks. Just to make lanterns for one day.

I roast the seeds too, lovely they are.

Sparklingbrook · 21/10/2013 09:08

Yes LeGav that's why they signify Halloween. Fact.

GhostsInSnow · 21/10/2013 09:08

My dog used to love the seeds bless him, give him horrible farts though Grin
I think YABU btw, the kids and I have had hours of fun out of a £3 Pumpkin. Don't see thats a waste personally.

Fleta · 21/10/2013 09:08

Roasted pumpkin seeds are divine Grin

We do one pumpkin a year - it brings a lot of pleasure. We compost the flesh and toast the seeds.

As far as I'm concerned it would only be morally reprehensible if they were coming out of the food chain ergo more people were going without.

ChasedByZombees · 21/10/2013 09:09

Oh do they taste rubbish? :(

I've just bought my first ever carving pumpkin and had plans for pumpkin soup. I feel deflated now.

LeGavrOrf · 21/10/2013 09:09

Well this is a good thread.

To make Pumpkin pie or soups etc it is best to buy edible pumpkin, which should be labelled as such in the shops Smile.

Sparklingbrook · 21/10/2013 09:11

Pumpkin anything tastes horrible IMO.

TSSDNCOP · 21/10/2013 09:11

Is there anything that one can do just for the fun of it without it being on the Mumsnet List of Eternal Judgement

Trills · 21/10/2013 09:12

You said in your OP that the flesh would be vile. So it's not a waste. It's the only thing worth doing with them.

Sparklingbrook · 21/10/2013 09:12

No TSS. No fun allowed especially with fruit and veg. Wink

LeGavrOrf · 21/10/2013 09:12

No.

Everything can and will be judged.

I must admit I don't really like pumpkins or squashes. All mouth and no trousers, IMO.

i always make lovely soup out the flesh and his year i have a recipe for pumpkin cupcakes which i will try, also i save the seeds and grow my own pumpkins the following year, there is always to many seeds so i will give the dry seeds a go they sound lovely

Trills · 21/10/2013 09:14

Watermelon sounds fantastic - and it'd be a spooky green colour (with possible oozy red bits)

LeGavrOrf · 21/10/2013 09:14

I don't like pumpkins trills, but I don't think Halloween pumpkins are worth eating (hence some being labelled edible as mentioned upthread)

TSSDNCOP · 21/10/2013 09:14

OK then. Skulks off to disguise large semi carved pumpkin bought specifically for Halloween candle stuffing purposes.

Hah! [thlgrn]

LeGavrOrf · 21/10/2013 09:15

Do you reckon the watermelon would collapse in on itself?

It's worth a go isn't it.

TSSDNCOP · 21/10/2013 09:16

Now watermelon, that truly is a fucking waste of time. Like a cucumber in drag and a bitter disappointment.

Unless carried to a party with the divine Patrick.

usualsuspect · 21/10/2013 09:18

I

BrokenSunglasses · 21/10/2013 09:18

Right, I am definitely going to try roasting the seeds this year! Thanks for the link and tips.

There you go LeGav, your unreasonableness may have saved some seeds from being consigned straight to the bin.

nightcircus · 21/10/2013 09:19

Use as topping for cottage pie mixed with potato and sweet potato.

As an extra component in root veg soup poss with bacon.

We had tuna and pumpkin pasties as kids

usualsuspect · 21/10/2013 09:19

I thought all pumpkins were the same.

Pumpkin cake is lovely.

LeGavrOrf · 21/10/2013 09:21

Where do all these fuckers grow then?

Are there massive fields in Norfolk or wherever filled with great big orange orbs?
