unless you opt out. Why? When was this made statutory law? And why didn't I know about it?

Sorry - managed to miss that link! I see others above hadn't realised they "have" to sell it either and assumed it was just to make money.

Maybe they should write on the forms that they are obliged under the X regulations to make it available for sale.

Well I don't bother ticking the box and I don't get loads of junk mail apart from the usual stuff from Royal Mail/hand delivery.

Just register with MOPS, and TOPS for telephone calls.

The fact is we live in an open democracy and the Electoral Roll is a public document. It always has been, to guard against electoral fraud. The ONLY difference now is that commercial organisations are required to pay use it. Quite right too, as we council taxpayers pay to compile it!

I really dislike the data that we are obliged to provide being sold to commercial enterprises, though. DVLA sell your details to car clampers so that they can threaten you with dodgy tickets. I think that's even worse than selling the electoral roll.

yeah if you dont opt out you end up with loads of nonsense
