To think I should feel normal now? Norovirus.

I had dreaded Norovirus 10 days ago and was entirely knocked off my feet for 48 hours but back to normal life after that. I have occasionally suffered with ibs but hadn't for a couple of months before the dreaded nv. Anyway since the dreaded nv my digestive system is totally buggered. Pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, look pregnant, tired and had enough. Has anyone else had problems carry on after nv? Help!

Took at least 2 weeks to recover from it - those symptoms after 10 days aren't that uncommon IMHO.

Tis evil is norovirus

LimitedEditionLady · 19/10/2013 16:53

What is norovirus?

pumpkinsweetie · 19/10/2013 16:57

Me and my family get this atleast once a year and i always find it knocks me for six too. I didn't feel completely better until 14 days after the onset of it.

The wreching caused me a great deal of muscle pain after the continous bouts of sickness, and the bloating & diarhea lasted for a bit too.
Horrible illness wish they would make a vaccanation for it!

Norwich, Ohio virus. We've all had it and its vile. My DC's (1&5) are afraid to eat incase they're ill again but slowly, appetites are coming back. Sod's law in my case - I was well enough to look after DH & DC's, but as soon as they were on the mend, it hit me hard :(

StillSeekingSpike · 19/10/2013 17:05

I feel your pain. 11 days in, I look five months pregnant, vomiting if i try to eat normally and still have explosive diarrhea. And I think my diaphragm is spasming after all the exploisions at both ends. GD IT'S VILE.

Lazysuzanne · 19/10/2013 17:13

I had it once very mildly (only one short episode of 'purging') but still felt very tired/depleted with stomach cramps for about a week afterwards

LaGuardia · 19/10/2013 17:16

A microbiologist once told me that if we all learned to wash our hands often, and properly, then we wouldn't catch these viruses. Despite working with all kinds of human waste, he had never been ill.

Lazysuzanne · 19/10/2013 17:20

I'm in no position to argue with a microbiologist but isnt it also the case that some people dont have active symptoms when exposed to infections because their immune systems are able to fight it off

LimitedEditionLady · 19/10/2013 17:33

Oh that sounds yak!oh dear op hope yourr better soon

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 19/10/2013 17:35

I hope you feel better soon. It is hideous. Had it once when DD was 8 weeks old and again when she was 8 months. Had never had it before but I have never been so ill. Seriously, I think I would rather have given birth again.

I found I felt weak for a good few days/weeks after so look after yourself.

whatareyoueventalkingabout · 19/10/2013 18:20

laguardia, that sounds like one very smug microbiologist ;-)

I clearly don't wash my hands properly because I had it twice in two weeks last November and December. It was HORRID and I thought I had done everything I could because I carried a Milton spray round with me for about a week and washed my hands so much they went really dry, but it came back.

I really really rate peppermint tea for soothing the cramps. Hope you feel better soon x

It's very common to have lactose intolerance for a while after norovirus - could easily explain what you are getting now.

Can you try cutting out dairy for a few days? If you feel better just gradually reintroduce it, the intolerance isn't permanent.

plecofjustice · 28/10/2013 17:03

I was given the best advice by a nurse at the Tropical Diseases hospital. A teaspoon of Manuka honey every morning for 6 weeks after anything like Noro. Just pop it on a spoon and get it down you.

It is amazing, I use it every time I get a tummy bug and it really does help. Apparently the honey has antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties which help the stomach heal following illness.

turkeyboots · 28/10/2013 17:07

Milton and other disinfectants don't really protect you from norovirus. Best thing is hot water and soap and lots of it.

Worst thing is that immunity only last 6 months and then you are at risk again.

gamerchick · 28/10/2013 17:11

The only thing that stands a chance of killing noro is bleach. Last year I had a horrified conversation with a pharmacy worker who said she wasn't worried because she using loads of antibacterial gel. You have to use lots of soap and wash it off your hands.

I blame the rise of those gels for the increase in noro tbh.

gamerchick · 28/10/2013 17:12

The damned thing can live for weeks in still water.. its a swine to kill. God knows how long it can live elsewhere.
