To make an apple crumble and smother it in custard?

DH and I are (technically) on diets after overindulging on honeymoon last month. He's out on a jog right now whereas I am sitting on the sofa with my dogs looking longingly at our apple tree because I really fancy apple crumble today.

DH is struggling to keep on track with his weight loss regime so would it be unfair of me to make said pudding?

For breakfast?

Bluebell99 · 19/10/2013 09:10

You could make a healthier version ? Like doing one that has less fat than others. The one I use Delia uses 75g of butter. Also you can add porridge oats to the crumble.

ScarletLady02 · 19/10/2013 09:11

Well it IS fruit technically....counts towards your 5 a day Grin

CrohnicallyLurking · 19/10/2013 09:14

Yep, don't add sugar to the apples, use less crumble topping and mix in oats, homemade custard with less sugar in (it's not that hard if you have an electric whisk). Take the dogs for a nice long walk and enjoy your crumble when you get back.

Try cooking the apples under foil rather than under crumble. With cinnamon and not too much sugar. Custard on top. W do that a lot, with plums too. Much less fattening than crumble, just ok almost as satisfying.

Yanbu. Skimping on treats makes a diet feel like punishment, that's why they're so hard to stick to. Make a full fat crumble with sugary custard, and invite someone over to share it. Eat a sensible amount and stop obsessing about it. Making foods naughty and forbidden fucks with your head.

PerpendicularVincentPrice · 19/10/2013 11:53

What CailinDana said Grin

No point obsessing, make it, enjoy it and exercise it off!

PublicEnemyNumeroUno · 19/10/2013 11:55

Mmmm apple crumble - threads like this dont do my diet any favours Grin

Beastofburden · 19/10/2013 11:55

The thing is, they have an Apple tree. A whole tree full of potential crumble. So recipes for apples that are lighter will help until the wasps get them all.

NorbertDentressangle · 19/10/2013 12:02

Make the crumble (using less sugar/fat than you normally would) and enjoy it!

Other ides for the apples in your garden could include baked apples which my gran always used to do, stuffed with dates or other dried fruits like raisins, sultanas etc . Surely that's low fat and no added sugar (just the natural sugars in the fruit?)

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 19/10/2013 12:08

Make the crumble, portion in up and freeze some.

Life is far too short to scrimp on crumble.

MrsBrownsGirl · 19/10/2013 13:10

Thanks all, have made crumble anyway but with less topping, baked apples sounds nice though, had forgotten about doing them like that as haven't had them for years!

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 19/10/2013 16:51

Wonders where op lives, I could go scrumping and make a crumble :)

Hope you enjoy your crumble

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/10/2013 16:54

This is not good.

Stratter's has cake.

Tiggy is making sodding cheesecake.

You have your ruddy crumble.

I managed to find a lonely Penguin biscuit at the back of the cupboard. I don't even care if it's out of date.

Sad
