David Blunkett described it as a scandal in 2000, surely its time to end it once and for all.

I am in Northern Ireland and 113 schools here still do.

Mine do but then I'm not in the UK. And here we're talking hole in the ground, really not 'nice', but perfectly useable and the DCs don't have a problem with them.

specialsubject · 18/10/2013 19:37

assuming that the toilets are clean and functional, the fact that your precious little one actually has to step out of doors does not seem an issue to me.

Bluestocking · 18/10/2013 19:40

Binkyridesagain, I was about to post a similar story! Were you at junior school in south London, by any chance?

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 18/10/2013 19:42

Are you talking about primary or secondary?
Not that either would bother me but at secondary we regularly had to go outside to different buildings or parts of the school.

BeeWi · 18/10/2013 20:26

Christ, when did some kids start lacking the resilience to go out with a coat on in the rain?

Catinthebed · 18/10/2013 20:38

Seriously does no-one see the problems with 26 four year olds who need to put on a coat and be taken across the tard twice a day to go to the loos.

In addition the older kids don't drink enough as they don't want to go out in cold and rain. This leads to health problems like kidney infections and constipation.

OP posts:
Salmotrutta · 18/10/2013 20:52

"taken" to the loos?

Why?

The loos could be the same distance away even if they were inside and teachers wouldn't be ferrying kids to them.

Things must have changed mightily since mine were at primary...

Salmotrutta · 18/10/2013 20:52

And playtime/lunch is for going to the loo surely?

Grennie · 18/10/2013 20:54

Why would the kids not drink enough? They have breaks and lunchtime for drinks.

complexnumber · 18/10/2013 21:15

There was graffiti carved into the red brick walls of our school loo that dated back to 1948 as I recall.

Quite a history lesson!

morethanpotatoprints · 18/10/2013 21:29

What child wouldn't want to go out in the rain, or a wander to the outdoor loo?
It was quite an adventure at our primary.
Why the need for coats and to be taken?
Surely all 26 wouldn't want to go at the same time and most go during break anyway.

Fakebook · 18/10/2013 21:43

Never heard of outdoor toilets. Isn't it a bit mean for foundation stage children who still have accidents? Dd's class didn't have to ask to use the loo in foundation. They were allowed to just go as soon as they wanted and they were connected to the classroom. My dd wet herself running across the playground in icy weather during play time once to get to the toilets in time. I don't think I'd approve of outdoor toilets tbh.

Just wanted to add, I was shocked to learn they have wipes, soft tissue and squeezy soap dispenser in schools now. Not the tracing paper and green coloured soap bar we had.

marmaladeandguitars · 18/10/2013 21:48

OP- where in N.I has outdoor loos? I'm in N.I and have never heard of this, despite going to primary school in a very deprived area and now living in a rural area where more than one old pub has outdoor toilets only.

For everyone saying it's OK- I bet you'd go beserk if your DC schools had outdoor loos! Or your place of employment, or the gym, or wherever else has indoor toilets that you merrily use..you know, what with this being 2013 and all.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 18/10/2013 21:54

Also from NI and have never heard of this. But am now struggling to remember if any of the mobiles at my primary or secondary school had loos beside the classrooms. Don't think they did. I spent 1 year in a mobile in primary and had various classes in mobiles in my teens, and yet can't remember going to the toilet indoors ever being an issue.

Morloth · 18/10/2013 22:21

My DC's school has outside toilets. I am not going berzerk.

Mum's house still has an outside loo and I regularly use portaloos for work.

We are all still alive.

VivaLeThrustBadger · 18/10/2013 22:25

We had outside loos when I was at primary, we all managed.

I still have a fully working outside loo at home now. We do have an indoor one as well.

ChrisTheSheep · 18/10/2013 22:49

We had outdoor toilets in my primary school. There was a special cubicle at the far end for the teachers: I remember being incensed to learn that they had pink, soft toilet paper in their toilet, while we had that Izal stuff.

Picturesinthefirelight · 18/10/2013 22:50

I think the melting refers to the wicked witch if the west who melts if she has water on her.

ChrisTheSheep · 18/10/2013 22:51

Now I think about it, the outside toilets were actually pretty handy at break-time: no need to go traipsing through corridors for a wee.

Jan49 · 18/10/2013 22:55

For everyone saying it's OK- I bet you'd go beserk if your DC schools had outdoor loos! Or your place of employment, or the gym, or wherever else has indoor toilets that you merrily use..you know, what with this being 2013 and all.

But the kids play outside at break and lunchtimes in the playgrounds so outdoors in the playground is a logical place for the toilets to be.

Salmotrutta · 18/10/2013 23:16

Well quite Jan49 - makes logistical sense if you ask me to have loo blocks in the playground!

As long as they are clean, plumbed in and functional does it really matter.

I didn't die of playground loos and either did my contempories - 1960/70s school days.

HerRoyalNotness · 18/10/2013 23:41

I've worked on jobsites with outside loos, you just get on with it! It might actually be nice that the kids get a breath of fresh air going out to the loo, wake them up a bit, out of the drowsy inducing classrooms

goldopals · 19/10/2013 00:47

All of our toilets are outside the buildings in little brick and tin sheds. All kids have to go outside to go to the loo.
