Clearing up the PC before bed and on the history is this

www.comedy.co.uk/news/story/000001192/

The video is the Horrible Histories RAF song that DS was watching earlier. I knew he had it on but have never watched it before.

Its wonderful and very moving, such a shame that there will not be anymore HH to teach our children :(

The average age of a Battle of Britain pilot was just 20 years old (not old enough to vote at the time).

A pilot's life expectancy was 87 flying hours.

Of the 2936 aircrew (nearly 600 of whom were non-British personnel) who took part in the Battle of Britain, 544 died during the Battle or shortly afterwards of wounds received. Another 814 Battle of Britain survivors lost their lives before the end of the war.

I hope we can continue teaching our children about these brave men, with our without HH.

Welled up slightly myself Blush

Horrible Histories are amazing. I saw the whole set of books in the works last week, would have bought it if I'd had the cash!

Now you've reminded me, I might remind my dad he's still looking for another Christmas present for me...Wink

ChubbyKitty · 18/10/2013 02:31

But yes on a more serious note I also agree that their bravery needs to continue to be taught. As Mr Churchill said, 'never has so much been owed...'

20 is younger than I am now. And I'm fairly young. Sad

Was going to bed but ended up watching the HH Prom on Youtube.

My grandad said that the day we forget is the day it happens again, so I totally agree that we should teach our children.

Thanks for that Bogey. My grandfather was one of the Polish members of Bomber Command who never came back. My DM never knew her father. So glad they mentioned Polish and Czech flyers. That often gets forgotten and I hear and see too much Polish hating.

Donkeyok · 18/10/2013 06:10

What no more HH? Sad

SuperiorCat · 18/10/2013 06:21

No more HH? Since when? And why? It's one of the best children's tv programmes.

MrsDavidBowie · 18/10/2013 07:14

I go into primary schools and tell year 6 aboutmy dad who was in Bomber Command, and had a bit of an adventure (3 days in the North Sea , lost half the crew).

I have extended it into a 30 minute talk..I have his medals, lots of photos, 2 books my dad is in...they love it.
I have just read a wonderful book about the making of the Bomber Command memorial, with moving stories of BC survivors.
Whenever I see an elderly gentleman in a RAF tie, I cry.

GiveItYourBestShot · 18/10/2013 07:42

He can be a bit of a tit but Chris Evans' Dambusters show had me in tears - so many families sharing stories like yours, MrsTP. Ordinary young men doing extraordinary things. Jeremy Clarkson's programme about the commandos was aslo excellent. I thought it was so good that high-profile presenters were making sure these stories were heard.

Bogeyface · 18/10/2013 18:27

According to various sources via google, the most recent series was the last one but they will make specials from time to time. They are planning one for next year to tie in with anniversary of WWI.
