AIBU to do this while DD has chicken pox

DD2 is 2.2 and came down with chicken pox this morning.

She has been fascinated with potty and toilet for ages. For various reasons we haven't gone down the potty training route yet but there have a been a few successes when she has asked to use the potty. I was planning to start properly at the end of November when my lectures finish and I'll be home with her more.

But now she has chicken pox. She has been running around in great form all day. I was kind of thinking seeing as we're likely to be stuck at home for the next 5 days or so, it might be a good time to start.

Or AIBtotallyU?

If she seems happy within herself I would, might also be relieving for her if she has any spots in the nappy area to have them uncovered. She sounds ready good luck i hate potty training

valiumredhead · 15/10/2013 07:13

I wouldn't start anything if she's poorly tbh.

milkjetmum · 15/10/2013 07:15

I would be tempted to give it a go. But bear in mind that when my dd had chickenpox she wasp roperly 'poorly' a few days after spots appeared, so perhaps be prepared for an off day later this week.

WaitMonkey · 15/10/2013 09:33

I wouldn't. Even if she's well today, she may not be tomorrow. 2.2 is still very young, plenty of time when she's 100%.

My 2yr old was fine when he had chicken pox. Very spotty but otherwise fine. He did a lot of nudey running around the garden as it was the heatwave. Some young children get away with feeling near normal.

I did this to ds1 may as well Do
something constructive beens stuck in .

It looks like there are a few big spots coming up around her waist so nappy free time might be essential anyway.

Good to know it's not a totally off the wall idea. Might just play it by ear and see how she is without forcing anything, especially over the first few days.

Makes me wish we were in our old house with wooden floors instead of carpet everywhere though...

In an ideal world, once you start you shouldn't stop. It can take quite a bit of time at that age so what happens if this week is successful and then you are back at lectures? If the odd daily accident will cause lots of hassle, then I would wait.
If not, then why not go for it.
In my experience, at that age you simply need to do lots of prompting for quite a long time. Don't assume that toilet trained will mean that they will know when to go even when they seem to have gotten the hang of it. As soon as they are engrossed in something interesting they are likely to forget.

DarkVelvetySilkyShiraz · 15/10/2013 10:19

Yes its a good time to start but remember she may only be taking an interest and only ready to start it when she is older.

When I say ready, I mean she can understand it and you will literally have a few accidents in the mean time whilst she is learning.

valiumredhead · 15/10/2013 10:22

Ime you can stop and start, sometimes it takes months and is a longer process than just matter of a week.

SpottedDickandCustard · 15/10/2013 10:27

You could give it a go and see how it goes.

If she's not ready or feeling ill you could shelve the idea for a while.

My DS was a bit hot and bothered before his CP spots came out but once they came out he was his usual chirpy self. Not all children feel unwell with CP thankfully.
