bottle of pepsi = 99p
chocolate bar (large!) =£1

both clearly priced on the original packaging.

If the person behind the counter says "£1.99 please." I will hand over £2 and not wait for my penny change.

HOWEVER, if they say "£2 please"....

GIVE ME MY BLOODY PENNY.

And breathe.

I use up my loose change in self-scan machines, or put it in charity tins if there are some nearby.

Seriously, self-scan is the ideal place to offload a purseful of coppers.

I've never had a shop assistant deliberately over-charge like that. I always wait for my change as well - not because I'm "tight", but because that's the way you're supposed to do it. If everyone refused to take small change, the cashier's till would be out and they might even get in trouble because of it.

is it not illegal to throw away or deface money?

That's my kind of diet... looks at coke bottle and kitkat...

I would say nice and loudly "No. It's £1.99 isn't it?" and then stand there and wait for her to admit she was wrong. A few times, and she'll at least recognise you even if she does it to other people

Oh I wish they'd abolish 1 and 2p coins like they have in some European countries, the bloody things drive me mad. I grew up in the Netherlands before the Euro and when I was a child the smallest denomination coin was the 5 cent coin, everything rounds up or down. If you pay by card you pay the exact amount, cash is rounded. Over the long term it works out the same and your wallet doesn't weigh a ton.

YANBU though, it'd make me mad too if it happened here because they can't just unilaterally decide you're going to pay an extra penny.
