16 is old enough to get married! Yanbu

chelsbells · 13/10/2013 12:16

YANBU. Keep your phone on you and all will be fine - better than taking a poorly baby out in this miserable weather! A sixteen year old should be more than capable for 30mins IMO - I know I would have been!

skylerwhite · 13/10/2013 12:16

Not unreasonable in the slightest. Go! A 16 year old should be more than capable of watching a baby for an hour or so.

judgejudithjudy · 13/10/2013 12:17

Am just a worrier then lol :-(

Depends on the 16 year old; my cousin has a 16 year old son that I would have no qualms at all with watching my child, however, her 19 year old is as dippy as hell and wouldn't trust her with my dog let alone my child! At 16, I was regularly babysitting various children and was pretty responsible, but a lot of my friends at the time weren't! You know your 16 year old better than anyone!

bigTillyMint · 13/10/2013 12:20

YANBU - 16 is more than old enough to mind a baby for a bit.

I was babysitting at 14, changing nappies and all. Not a problem.

CecilyP · 13/10/2013 12:22

Of course you are not being unreasonable - 16 year old's even have their own babies, not that I am encouraging this, BTW. Unless your 16 year old is exceptionally irresponsible, it will be fine.

shewhowines · 13/10/2013 12:28

Depends on the child , but yes no reason not to. In fact, I'd encourage it Grin

junkfoodaddict · 13/10/2013 12:34

YANBU but I think a 16 year old might be more suited to do the shopping than babysitting.

VodkaJelly · 13/10/2013 12:37

My 17 year old DS looked after my DD since she was 2 months old (just nipping to the corner shop, not for extended periods), my 14year old DS looked after her for 10 minutes last night whilst I went on an emergency shop run (ran out of nappies!)

PrimalLass · 13/10/2013 12:40

I was 14 when my brother was born and babysat him lots.

bigTillyMint · 13/10/2013 12:40

junkfood, why is that?

TheCrumpetQueen · 13/10/2013 12:41

I used to babysit my 2 nephews (2 under 2) and take them out in a double buggy when I was 13.

She'll be fine!

Bowlersarm · 13/10/2013 12:42

I think it's fine. A lot of 16 year olds babysit, and a few 16 year olds are parents themselves.

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 13/10/2013 12:43

I work with a 16 year old I'd happily leave with my DC...I also know plenty of 'adults' that I certainly would not!

Depends on personality more than age once they're over 14ish I reckon...

So,no,YANBU,as I assume you trust your 16 yr old Grin

exexpat · 13/10/2013 12:45

16 year olds are fine to babysit. I have a 15-year-old and I would be tempted to send him to the shops instead of going out myself, but of course that doesn't work if the shops are a car journey away rather than within walking distance.

dopeysheep · 13/10/2013 12:50

I think it's absolutely fine. Mind you I would send the 16 y.o to the shops cos I am lazy.

SuperiorCat · 13/10/2013 12:51

Totally fine - there are some 16yos with their own 10 month olds.

itsonlysubterfuge · 13/10/2013 13:00

I use to babyst my 6 month old cousin overnight when I was 14/15. It's not a big deal.

FunkyBoldRibena · 13/10/2013 13:07

Send the 16yr old out for bread and milk. Much easier solution and you don't get wet that way.

5madthings · 13/10/2013 13:08

yanbu i let my 14yr old look after his younger siblings, not all of them at once unless they are asleep in bed. but he will watch the two yr old or five yr old whilst i nip out. quite often he goes to the shops for me as well.

NoComet · 13/10/2013 13:12

I'd leave my small DC mad 12 year old with a 10 month old for 30 minutes.

Never mind a 16y

Actually DD2 would be way better than DD1(15) as DD1 isn't fond of little people.

theothermrssoos · 13/10/2013 14:54

Nope. I have twin sisters, they are now 17, but I moved back into the area when they were 15, they often take my 2 girls out to the park or the local soft play centre, or watch them for an hour whilst I clean/shop/drag my rotting self to the GPs.

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/10/2013 14:56

Totally fine op Smile
