daughter's skin tag

My dd 11 just crawled through the door going "Im dying". I looked around and saw she bleeding from the neck and thought she had poured fake Halloween down her neck vampire style. 10 mins later she unwrapped a loo roll bandage from her neck. OMG I just realised she had cut off a very annoying skin tag she had tolerated to a year.
She has put some savlon on it but I wondered what to do next?

Is it still bleeding?

ClaraOswald · 12/10/2013 21:47

Nothing, except tell her she's an idiot for self surgery.

Donkeyok · 12/10/2013 21:50

Yes its still bleeding but not pouring anymore just a bit messy.

Ouch! Shock

It would have been better to tie it off (in order to cut the blood supply and let it drop away naturally) but there you go!

Apply pressure to stop the bleeding with a clean dressing, then apply a plaster for a couple of days because it'll feel sore - I wouldn't apply Savlon just yet. I think I'd let it dry out on its own.

Maybe give paracetamol/calpol to ease her discomfort, too.

I cut mine off a year ago. Used TCP to clean it. Whilst it may not have been sensible I'm glad I did - no evidence of where it was.
If it has stopped bleeding massively just keep it clean and covered. If bleeding badly go to A & E

TheGlovesAreOrf · 12/10/2013 21:53

Skin tags are a bastard, proper bleeders.

Its done now though.

Donkeyok · 12/10/2013 21:54

Whoops I'll have to take the savlon off. Thanks I did do the tie up with cotton and although it changed colour it didn't drop off think the cotton may have dropped off. We were going to wait for a long holiday so it didn't show as its round the front.
Cant believe it my ds just fell over as the door handed fell off in his hand its all kicking off here at bed time.

Ouch.
I'd imagine no lasting damage. Lots of Doctors surgeries would do that as a minor procedure though. Take her to the GP's to get it tidied if she hasn't got it all off.
Next time - easier to tie a tiny ligature of invisible thread on it, once the blood supply is cut off it will shrivel and drop off without pain or drama.

Donkeyok · 12/10/2013 21:56

Will it scar more if I put a plaster over it or not?

OP posts:
MolotovCocktail · 12/10/2013 22:00

A plaster won't make it scar Smile It will just stopfurther damage to her skin by offering protection whilst it heals. Nice and clean and dry, that's the way to go here.

Donkeyok · 12/10/2013 22:03

Many thanks going to get my doctors bag now Flowers all

Like most bits it will heal with pretty much no scar (maybe fine white dot). For now press into it really hard for about 5 minutes and probably a plaster overnight so the sheets don't get wrecked. Take it off in the morning to air dry.

I took one off under my chin sliding down a rope in PE class at about 8yo. It made a mess then scabbed over but I'd never be able to find it now. I used to pick at it and there's a school photo with blood on my shirt collar. I think Mum was delighted with it being gone.

teacherandguideleader · 12/10/2013 22:03

Mine hasn't scarred at all and I used a plaster. The most important thing is keeping it clean.

ProudAS · 12/10/2013 22:59

I cut mine off and whilst I wouldn't necessarily advise DIY surgery it was fine and I was glad to be rid of it. Just put a plaster on whilst blood clotted and bleeding probably washed away any germs. I was left with a slight mark but can't see it now.
