I've just opened a tub of natural yoghurt that has the best before date of 1st October. It looks, smells and tastes ok...

I wonder how all these people would have survived before best before dates. Seriously, sniff it and see. I am 40 and still alive after never going by best before dates and just trusting my eyes and nose. Milk products REEK when they are really off.

24 minutes PYC (Post Yoghurt Consumption) and no sign of any illness...

Milk and yoghurt both often both last far beyond their Use By/best before date. You can easily assess by sight & smell if it is edible or not.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 11/10/2013 21:58

This reminds me of the Catherine Tate sketch where the lad had a youghurt (cinnamon and gooseberry) one day out of date at a picnic and there were allsorts of dramatics about ' I am going to die, goodbye mama' etc etc. DS even now says this as a joke if we dare to feed him out of date food. the other family joke is that if its rank / mouldy / soft and soggy / stale... leave it for DH as he will happily eat almost anything. Fine. Smells ok, tastes ok .... its fine.

I hate that people would rather trust dates machine stamped on packaging than their own senses ...

Nellabutterfly · 11/10/2013 23:23

My parents have some fromage frais in their fridge dated April 2012. Really. My mum ate one on Sunday and she's fine no more insane than she was before she ate it anyway, so I suspect 10 days won't be a problem... I declined to give one to DD, mind you, they were older than her ffs!

Finola1step · 11/10/2013 23:40

Oh Nella. That's 18 flipping months. Don't people clean out their fridge? For the love of sweet Jaysus, that's enough to push me to my limit. Grin

I bet it was fine. Natural yoghurt doesn't go off if its sealed properly.

I have this old yoghurt making machine that used to be my mum's. I basically mix half a tub of natural yoghurt with about a litre of milk in a bowl and cover it with a lid and wrap it with tea towels and leave it on the machine thing over night. It gently heats the milky mixture and in the morning it's proper natural yoghurt. I use it for mixing fruit in and for curries and stuff and it lasts about a week. Better than buying tubs of the stuff over and over again.

PeppiNephrine · 12/10/2013 00:00

I make my own yogurt. I don't stamp dates on it, and have never ever made anyone ill with it.
Bad yogurt smells bad. It's obvious. And it lasts for ages.

Chippednailvarnish · 12/10/2013 08:49

Morning! I'm still alive With no ill effects, so I'm off to have yogurt for breakfast.

i would have used the yogurt. if it was sealed and smelt ok, but i often ignore use by dates.

I wouldnt ever eat any yog past best before date, that hasnt been kept in a fridge. I refuse them if ever we stay in bed and breakfasts as no knowing how they are kept. They are deadly if they are off. About seven years ago i had a yog from bed and breakfast and ten minutes later husband had the other one. They hadnt been stored correctly. The next day the d started then the v and ten minutes later my husband and i were both taking turns using the bathroom. The d and v lasted four days and we both have never been so ill. The whole thing was awful. We lost stones and had no energy. I remember walking around a musuem on day five and looking at the wheelchairs and wondering if i could use one and im someone that runs up stairs if theres a lift. My amazing mil was about to fly out to rescue us (only in usa) but instead booked us into somewhere where we were given bland food. It was three weeks until we began to eat properly again. The only other food we had eaten the day before was bread apart from the yog. It was our old friend sam and ella!!! So please be careful around yogs.

Finola1step · 12/10/2013 09:15

Chipped am glad to hear you are still with us this morning with no ill effects.

London. Like you, my DH and I had salmonella on holiday (Mexico, ten years ago). I lost two stone and it took three months for me to feel fully recovered. This is probably where my food cautiousness stems from. No matter what anyone says, I don't think I could eat anything 10 days past its date especially if its food that's meant to be kept in the fridge.

Chippednailvarnish · 12/10/2013 09:25

I think there is a very big difference between eating badly stored food or food that has been contaminated compared to eating food that has passed a notional date stamp.
