AIBU to email school about this?

I'm really not sure if I should email my son's school about this as I've had a stressful week so could be over reacting.
My son is in year 9 and today took a pasta snack pot for lunch. It didn't have a fork in the lid as some of them do so my son asked at the cafeteria for a fork. He was told he could only have a fork if he purchased something!! Luckily he had a small amount of money so bought a small cup of juice for 30p and was allowed a fork!
Is this madness? Should I be annoyed and email the school? Or should I just remember to give him a fork next time?
Thanks

I'd email for clarification,yes

hiddenhome · 11/10/2013 17:12

That's ridiculous and really petty minded. I would email the school.

Dobbiesmum · 11/10/2013 17:14

I would email to make sure but am remembering the time I forgot to put a spoon in DD's lunchbox so she borrowed one from school, then accidentally put it in her lunchbox and brought it home! Blush maybe they have lost a few bits of cutlery in the past and want to cover costs?

vestandknickers · 11/10/2013 17:16

Does sound crazy. As someone else has said I'd just email asking for clarification before going in all guns blazing! If true, I'd be very cross though.

How mean of the school.
It would bother me but my son, also yr 9 would hate me to email the school about it.

Redbookworm · 11/10/2013 17:20

It's plastic cutlery if that makes any difference!

Trouble is, the canteen is a business - I guess it's the same as taking your packed lunch into a cafe - would you expect them to provide you with cutlery to eat your own food ?

Different if he were a little one in Infant school, but in Secondary school it isn't really the school's business. Bit annoying for him, but no harm done really. I'd save my e-mails for bigger issues.

Dobbiesmum · 11/10/2013 17:22

Plastic? Just ignore my answer... I thought you meant normal cutlery!

Blueandwhitelover · 11/10/2013 17:25

We have lost over 100 plastic spoons this term! When lent a plastic spoon I tell children to place it with the dirty cutlery so it isn't that they don't know what to do.

BrokenSunglasses · 11/10/2013 17:26

I don't think it's worth emailing the school over. Just remind your ds to take his own fork. The school isn't there to provide free ones.

plantsitter · 11/10/2013 17:30

I reckon 100 plastic spoons has probably cost you a pound, blueandwhitelover.

It may be a business but it functions (and profits from) a SCHOOL and if they can't be a bit flexible they are not fit for purpose imo.

I would email OP.

Ok thanks for your replies. Like I said before I wasn't sure if I was overreacting! I won't bother emailing school just will make sure he has a fork in future :)

Wait, you wash plastic spoons? Aren't they supposed to be single use?

Redbookworm · 11/10/2013 17:42

Thanks for the suggestion flapjack but he is 13 years old and very prone to loosing things ( coats, phones, homework etc) ;)

my daughter's old school wouldn't even lend them a spoon to eat their yogurt with if they had one in their packed lunch. One girl ate hers with her finger as she didn't bring her own spoon!

sweetpieandpeas · 11/10/2013 18:44

We don't have a kitchen at school and as a result when children forget their cutlery they use the ones from the staffroom. I've replaced these twice in the past year from my own pocket and still we currently have no forks so eating a salad with a spoon is the way it is right now! If a child forgets now then we have none to lend them because they have all gone home and not come back!

I would imagine it has nothing to do with the school. Email the catering company to complain.
