DS's BF was sick once after his dinner this evening. Was fine all day, hasnt been sick since and has no other symptoms apart from being very very excited about the trip tomorrow.

His mum just texted me asking if I thought she should let him go if he is fine after having his breakfast at 7 ish and not being sick by half eight. She has been texting me all night to find out if any of mine have been ill as there was a major vomitting incident in school a couple of days ago. There is a bug going around but it seems to be a minor one, not full on D&V.

Part of me wants to say no, the rule is 24 hours but the other part of me is thinking that she is not a rule flouter by nature and if he is ok then let him go.

Not sure. AIBU to say let him go if he is ok on the basis that the other kids will already be incubating it?

Depends..

One of my DCs would throw up if she had too much to eat or was a bit anxious etc. The vomit would not be 'sick' vomit ( if you know what I mean). It's very different to a child who is suffering from a D&V bug.

It would also depend on the age of the kids and where they were going.

If she is unsure why he was sick he probably shouldn't go on the trip.

OrchidLass · 11/10/2013 03:03

No he absolutely shouldn't go. If he's ill while on the trip it would spoil it for everyone and some other children may not also be incubating it, some do some don't, but its hardly fair to knowingly increase that risk factor for other people's children. Though I expect many would call me hysterical for that view. I thought the standard rule was 48 hours now or does it vary from school to school?

TopHatAndTails · 11/10/2013 03:35

If he has just been sick because of excitement then of course he should go. If he has contracted a bug it's not really fair to him or others. I'm sure his mum will know which it is by the morning. Hope he gets to go Smile

My DS I would, and the school know this and accept it is 'just him'. He has even remained in school, having thrown up in the playground. The only way I can ever tell it is a bug with him is if it happens more than once, or if someone else in the family has it too.

My DD I wouldn't. She is only ever sick when she is ill.

The mum know her child, and if he is sick due to excitment, he will be fine.

NynaevesSister · 11/10/2013 05:31

Agree with others. DS also has a friend who will throw up because he is over excited. He will do this if he has just eaten or if he runs about. It is the excitement not a bug and only mum will know if he is actually sick or not.

If hes only been sick once i would let him go and im not much of a rule breaker.Sounds more like overeating and being really excited. Even as an adult iv been sick if iv eaten too much! If hes sick again then i wouldnt.

Littlefish · 11/10/2013 06:48

Absolutely not. She is considering putting a possibly contagious child on a coach with 30 other children and probably 3 or 4 adults. That's a coach, an enclosed space with re-circulating air with a child who was sick barely 12 hours earlier. That would be incredibly selfish in my opinion. In most areas, the rule is 48 hours, not 24, and definitely not 12.

scaevola · 11/10/2013 06:52

No, I'd keep him back. There's D&V in the school - someone's had a major vomiting incident.

This hasn't come out of the blue in a community otherwise infection free. Nor are D&V bugs necessarily mild in all.

A coaches too confined a place, and a trip to easily ruined for all.

SuperiorCat · 11/10/2013 06:56

It's a tough one.

DS and DD both get migraines and vomit with them, DN vomits if he eats too much sugar, I vomit if I'm anxious or over eat.

But if there is a bug going round then I'd err on the side of caution.
