soooo, my ds, 4, showed me the colouring in he did today at school. He then asked if Spider Woman was naked, and wasn't that a bit silly.

I was really quite shocked. This is the image.

What's the MN consensus? Is that just the deal with superheros (women, but also men) that they have exaggerated bodies? Or is it totally outrageous that my son spent the afternoon colouring in the giant bazongas of what he thought was a naked woman.

meganorks - most of the comics fans I know are married to other comics fans with children, who are also comics fans. But your main point about why the bloke (it's pretty much almost always a bloke in that genre) drew the girl like that still stands.

I do agree that women are portrayed in a sexy pose whilst men are posed to look more powerful. They are both built like greek gods but the men don't have to pose so provocatively. I wouldn't really want my kids to look at those comics until they were old enough to appreciate the storylines which can be pretty violent. It can sometimes be quite hard to find a 'beginner' superhero comic although I believe one of the many Spiderman titles is quite reliable, goodness knows which one.

However, stealing an copyrighted image from an artist without, presumably, asking permission was the worst thing the school did from my POV. I have some art on deviantart (wuthering heights comics) which a teacher has used as a teaching aid - I didn't mind as she asked permission. It was an honour.

Yeah, I wouldn't like that but I'm pfb, I do think she's a bit provocative though and I'm surprised that school used an image that could be a bit controversial. I wouldn't say anything but I might be tempted if it happened again.

Yanbu.

She looks like a page 3 pin up not an athlete.

mrstigs · 09/10/2013 12:20

Now, i don't care that she has huge norks, or wears all over lycra. (well, maybe i am a little Hmm but that's only because i wouldnt look like that even if it was spanx) But i don't like how women superheros have to be posed like page 3 models. The men don't have to groin thrust in every frame do they!
So no, i wouldn't like this. There must have been better images for the kids to colour in tbh.

plummyjam · 09/10/2013 12:27

If you Google images of ballet dancers or gymnasts you'll see exactly the same poses as in the picture. I think it demonstrates athleticism rather than being a sexual pose. She just happens to have a very large and well supported pair of breasts. Clearly not naked though.

So on the whole I wouldn't be that bothered although judging by the website its target audience was probably adults.

This would be ideal. :)

kali110 · 09/10/2013 19:11

Why is everything these days about sex?
I dont look at that pic and immediately think what a sexually provocative pose.....
And again there are a lot of woman who are comic book fans.
