To think Natwest should have cancelled my card when I told them it was lost?

I managed to lose my debit card over the weekend - whether it fell out of my purse when I was out shopping or my toddler has swiped it from my bag and hidden it in my house somewhere...

Anyway, I went to my Natwest branch yesterday to report that I had lost it. The guy I spoke to was all "oh no, what a nightmare" and said not to worry, he will order me a new one and it should be with me in a couple of days.

However, I have just discovered that he did not cancel my old card. All he did was order me a new one. I did'nt specifically say to him that the old one needed to be cancelled but surely this is obvious? I now need to go back to the branch tomorrow (which is a bit of a faff tbh) and think that I will be having words. AIBU?

I found out that it had not been cancelled as I inadvertantly used it to pay for something online the day after I had gone into the branch to report it missing. I have an account which held my cards. I was going to use another of my cards but used the lost one instead by accident. The payment went through on the lost card. I rang up Natwest this morning, spoke to a nice lady who apologized for the faff, confirmed that the guy that I spoke to on Monday should have cancelled the card, that the woman I spoke to yesterday was indeed talking bollocks (turns out she had cancelled the card yesterday even though she said she would'nt be able to and everything she said about pins and stuff was not true). She said that she was going to send emails to the branches in question to highlight the situation.

I have used my cards online to buy stuff before without the Natwest security box thing popping up asking for digits of your password. I am sure it is possible for people to use a card with just account details etc on some online shops. But it is just for my peace of mind more than anything.

Something similar happened to me about 15 years ago. I had my bag stolen and reported my cards stolen to the bank immediately. I few days later I got a letter off the bank saying I had gone overdrawn. The thieves had gone in about 20 different garages spending between £20/£30. This was at a time before chip and pin had been introduced. They were able to use my card as they had kept under the cheque guarantee limit of £100. Im was furious as I had assumed that if I cancelled my card it would become immediately invalid. Thankfully I got the money back so it was a happy ending but if you report something missing you expect it to be cancelled

pass Call me weird but I expect banks not to break data protection laws. People give them out all the time - true, but they chose too. I didn't choose to give that information out and the onus isn't on them to decide it.

Wahlzzit do you not think that has more to do with the Royal Mail rather than the bank? This has happened to me with various things - probably why RM is being sold off.
