to be astonished that there are approx a million tutors in the UK

Well most of those 450,000 teachers will or have in the past tutored someone. Then as someone said there are lots of Music tutors. Then people who come out of retirement/career break to "tutor" at Summer and Easter Revision schools. Probably people who work at Kumon and Explore learning are also counted.

My children have had tutor's so far for: Maths, Singing, Trumpet, Piano (more than one), Violin (2), French, German, and Dyslexia. Two of them have also had 1:1 tutoring in Maths provided by the school.

Never mind the tutors in 11+ areas.

I suppose they are including swiming teachers, karate instructors, gymnastics and football coaches as well as academic or music tutors.
