To insist that the photography studio photoshop my DS's school photo?

Cataline · 08/10/2013 10:11

DS is 6 and wears glasses. His school photo previews arrived and they're gorgeous Grin
However, there are bloody great big white flash highlights on his glasses on every single photo. Poor little soul - they look ridiculous! Sad

So, aibu to email the studio and request that:
a) they digitally correct the photos themselves or,
b) they send me the original digital image so I can get someone far more tech savvy to do it do it myself ??

Is it also reasonable to say in the email that i'm surprised a professional studio (who must deal with many glasses-wearing kids) has made such a silly error?

I know, in the grand scheme of things, that this isn't all that important but we get one school photo a year and i'm cross that they've managed to completely cock it up (and then have the audacity stupidity to send the blimmin photos home!)

So, what are your thoughts?

Is there a way to correct reflected light on glasses? They would have to not only take away the flash but also somehow insert your DS' eyes in the frames in its place.

cjel · 08/10/2013 10:19

I wouldn't critisise them or you will just get their backs up. Just say that ds is sensetive about his glasses and you were wondering if there was anything they could do to change them, Be nice and I really don't think it was a mistake on there part so don't tell them that!!!

JustBecauseICan · 08/10/2013 10:21

Aw bless him.

I had glasses at that age and would have been mortified tbh.

I would ask them, it's very easy to use that "wipey" thing they have I've done it myself on Picassa before so I'm sure a professional outfit can do something.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 08/10/2013 10:21

Of course it's a mistake on their part - it's MORE than a mistake, it's shocking photography. Definitely contact them and ask them to sort it out or redo the photos.

Lora1982 · 08/10/2013 10:24

The price they ask for, id ask them to do something. When they took the pic they could have easily asked him to tilt his head and they wouldnt of been this problem to start with

NoComet · 08/10/2013 10:24

I'm not sure it's correctable, but I'd be tempted to return the proofs with a middly snotty note about careful and professional lighting.

DD2 or me would not have been impressed if you did that to our school photos.

Norudeshitrequired · 08/10/2013 10:27

Do you have the option of buying the image on cd so you can get it photoshopped yourself? Lots of school photographers now offer that option.

TheFallenNinja · 08/10/2013 10:27

You could just ask them to correct it and save the criticism for something important.

CocacolaMum · 08/10/2013 10:30

Snappy snaps do a good deal. I cannot recall the exact details but its about £10 and you get a large, medium and a few smaller pics. The child in the pic in the window was in school uniform which is why I noticed it. Going to get my 2 dressed up in uniform and go in on a Saturday morning I think.

Cataline · 08/10/2013 10:36

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll email them to request that they try to correct it but leave off the snotty part!

NoRude... They do have that option but it's an additional £20 which i'd begrudge paying considering it was their mistake.

I've added one of the pics to my profile so you can see what I mean.

Can't see your profile OP

Cataline · 08/10/2013 12:22

Thanks - think i've adjusted it so it's visible now!

Oh, bless him, his sweet little face made me smile (I used to have two adorable little boys in glasses - now huge teens!) Yes, I would send a polite email to begin with and see how they respond. They may be lovely and agree to do it straightaway.

You can send the snotty bit later if they are unhelpful in the first instance Grin

tiredandtiredandtired · 08/10/2013 12:31

As a photographer, I would be making every effort to reduce flash highlights on glasses. A very poor effort on their part I'd say

Mandy2003 · 08/10/2013 12:36

What a gorgeous looking lad! They should have no problem getting rid of the flare, there's enough underlying eye colour there for them to 'clone' over any blank spots left once flare is removed.

I daresay that's why they call them proof shots, so that faults can be pointed out and corrected?

Tuonz · 08/10/2013 12:42

He's very handsome.

Showed dh the photographer the photo. He muttered about multiple light sources and something else I didn't understand. Basically the just I got was it could have been avoided.

I don't think yabu to ask for a free correction.

Cataline · 08/10/2013 12:45

Thanks Aniseeda and Mandy - I have to agree! Grin

I've just read the small print and it says " proofs are for expression only as all packs are fully colour corrected photographic prints. Please note however, prints are not digitally retouched and blemishes such as flash highlights on glasses will be printed as previewed" Confused
They're professional photographers- there shouldn't BE any flash highlights on glasses, surely?!

cogitosum · 08/10/2013 12:45

Ah he's cute.

Nothing helpful to add sorry

Cataline · 08/10/2013 12:46

Thanks Tuonz- posted right before I saw your post!

FreeWee · 08/10/2013 12:54

A professional photographer selling professional prints should have a) avoided it in the first place and so b) should correct with no additional cost. YANBU and your DS is an absolutely cutey! No wonder you want those photos!

YouTheCat · 08/10/2013 13:00

The fact they've put some kind of disclaimer in the small print says they've had problems like this before.

Our school photographers are awful. The last staff pic I had taken made me look like a maniacal chipmunk with a lazy eye. Truly dire.

I'd complain. Ask the school to use different photographers next time and I'd not be buying any either.

liquidstate · 08/10/2013 13:05

wow! he is going to be a heartbreaker when he is older Smile

Definitely their mistake. Complain to them and to the school as well. There are plenty of other photographers out there who could do a better job.

Was it a small local firm or one of those franchises that specialise in school pics?

redexpat · 08/10/2013 13:07

He is cute. And yes they should be better at their jobs. Complain.

DeWe · 08/10/2013 14:33

That happened one year at secondary to one of my friends. They got the photos given free-although of course that was when they printed the photos out for you.

Suddengeekgirl · 08/10/2013 15:08

At least they can be photoshopped (if the photographers are feeling helpful)

Reception ds had his done. Just after PE. So has his uniform and green socks on. No shoes! Just bright green socks sticking out from his cross legged position. Hmm
