To not bother eating when I am on my own.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 07/10/2013 17:26

I am sick of DH saying I should eat in the day time.

I can not stomach breakfast and when the DC are in school I really can't be bothered to make myself something to eat, I mainly have coffee or water in the day time.

I do the kids tea around 5 and then does mine and DH ( if he is not working) around 7. If he is working I tend to have a tin of soup or something on toast.

I don't eat when the DC do as meal time is a nightmare and I rather sit and make sure they are eating.

I am on 20mg of Citalopram, never bothered reading the side effect.

I have been on them for 3 years now, so it may be a side effect. I have a review soon so I will mention it to my GP then.

Same dosage as me then.

Side effects.

I live alone and I can't be bothered to cook often.

So I keep cereal bars, babybel cheeses, yoghurts, almonds, and apples and other fruit like grapes and bananas to snack on.

I suggest trying that or:

Keep frozen bread (wholemeal) to toast and open a can of salmon or tuna with a can of sweetcorn for an instant no cook meal.

Also have a glass of milk as a snack... or use something like Oats so Simple to make porridge.

I think you must eat more than this, maybe snacks/chocolate etc? Because if you only ate a tinned soup or something on toast all the time and nothing else all day, you would have lost a lot of weight? That would be less than 500 cals a day and you would be losing weight and really rather ill.

There's actually some good evidence pointing towards fasting being good for your health. So you are not necessarily being unreasonable to go regular periods without eating. You should definitely fast sensibly though. You say you have breakfast, then nothing till the evening meal. You would probably feel much less tired if you skipped breakfast altogether and ate nothing till late afternoon. Have a cup of coffee if you start failing a bit and it should perk you up. If you feel like you could put some butter & coconut oil in it (bulletproof coffee) and whizz it with a blender. This will fill you up, but won't affect your fast. By midday you'll probably feel a big surge of energy and be a bit euphoric - you shouldn't feel tired or hungry, especially after a few days of getting used to it.

In the evening you will have to keep in mind that you have not eaten all day and need to get all of your macro's and micro's in the meal/s you do have. Try fitday (it's free) to log down your food intake and make sure you're getting enough. I'd recommend this to anyone, fasting or not - most people would be very surprised to learn how much good whole food they have to eat to get what they need.

Wiki Intermittent Fasting to get some more ideas if you're interested op. With a couple of tweaks you might start feeling a lot better.

when you go to the gop ask to have your thyroid checked too

your husband isn't being unreasonable, he is just worried about you!

specialsubject · 07/10/2013 18:49

tablets are not a substitute for food.

OP, you have physical health problems, possible mental problems and are setting a terrible example for your kids. Your husband is asking you to sort it out.

none of these things are your fault, but refusal to get help IS. So please get help.

You need good nutrition to keep you well and strong in your heart and mind.

Anorexics aren't just people who want to lose weight to look like models. I was anorexic 20 years ago through grief when my dad died and I've never wanted to lose weight (well... until recently...), I just didn't want to eat any more. I was eventually dragged to the doctor by my friend and put on Complan which was disgusting but all I could keep down at the time.

In your case though, it might not be emotional at all. If you feel fairly well in yourself you should try and eat healthily to get all the food groups into you even if you don't have much. Soup may well be a source of all sorts of vitamins and minerals depending on how good the soup is you have. Perhaps get an MOT from your doctor just to make sure you don't have a wonky thyroid, or anaemia or something.

Personally I don't think it matters when you eat as long as it's healthy.

SPsTwerkingNineToFive · 07/10/2013 18:53

Thus is how I am. I only eat if hungry. Some days I will have a sandwich all day and some days will pig out.

WorraLiberty · 07/10/2013 18:54

random, the OP says she doesn't eat breakfast.

foreverondiet · 07/10/2013 19:08

Sounds like your body is in starvation mode, as a result you are exhausted. If you want to fix it you need to eat more, and do some activity. Your diet is seriously lacking in nutrition.

To help metabolism need 3 meals a day, each with protein - this will rev up metabolism. Don't see much point in GP other than to rule out anaemia / thyroid complaint.

The more protein you eat the more you'll rev up your metabolism - obviously need some fat and carbs as well but I really can't emphasize important of protein at each meal to fix metabolism.

eg even if its just omelette for breakfast, tin of tuna / salmon / other fish or similar for lunch and some chicken and veg for dinner.

Also need activity to help metabolism - recommend 30 day shred.

randomAXEofkindness · 07/10/2013 19:10

Oh yes Worra. I read that wrong.

I do agree with you that the op is not getting adequate nutrition. Obviously she is going to feel awful if she's nutrient deficient, and a tin of soup or something on toast is not going to give her everything she needs. That's why I was pointing out the importance of fasting consciously if she is going to continue to miss meals, rather than just having a bit of something when she feels like.

LeaveTheBastid · 07/10/2013 19:14

Without meaning to sound rude at all, how are you 12st at 5ft 3 if all you eat a tin of soup/toast most days? What do you eat on a good day when DH is home?

I tend not to eat breakfast but even I can't last past 1pm on tea and coffee alone.

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 07/10/2013 19:20

DH is home 1 day a week then I will eat normally, big roast dinner, bolognase, take aways. I tend to pig out.

It's only the days he is working.

I am going to change and perhaps start eating with the DC

"I am actually over weight 12stone and 5ft3in"

Can I suggest you go to your GP for some blood tests. MIL is overweight, never hungry, never wants to eat and is tired a lot. She has a problem with her kidneys.
