I was made redundant this week and im being paid until the end of month but

I have taken a temp job and I hate it , only been there one day.

They were asking me to please come back Monday I just feel so depressed of the thought of going back.

They asked if I would be interested in staying on a permanent basis I said the money would not be enough to cover childcare they said we can review it but.

In doing 40 hours and im going to struggle as I have two young kids, before I worked part time and was earning more than I am getting now by working full time.

I guess I feel so down hearted right now , I need to find something else what would you do?

I wouldn't go back. Get in touch with your temp agency and tell them the hours etc don't suit and ask if they have anything else.

Just a thought, when I was made redundant I got paid for a while after I finished work and I wasn't allowed to work anywhere else or I would have had to pay my redundancy money back. Have you looked in to that?

No they paid a months wages thats all and no I have not looked into it goggling now thanks.

Maybe not they came across as desperate the training was rubbish and I felt really down.

They were kind and they all seem nice but its a very young office not sure if I want to fit in.

Its down the road from where I live its just rubbish money Its the same job I was doing when I was in my 20s.

My head is all over the place right now I feel so redundant right now.

But im guessing its better than being at home doing nothing.

If it is just temping then I would stick at it for now, because at least it is some money coming in. Surely after one day you cannot write it off?
If you have worked in the same place for a while then going somewhere new is always daunting and strange. I would give it at least a week and then think it through over next weekend.

But speak to the agency and tell them that you are overqualified and would they please find you something else.

Don't go if you hate it. Right now you've been made redundant so you can get benefits if the need be.

However if you took a job you really hated then just quit you wouldn't get benefits for 6 months.

If its temporary I would stick at it until you've definitely got something else lined up. It doesn't have to be forever but you've been pretty lucky to find anything else so quickly.
Surely being jobless is worse?

SeaSick - are you serious? Claim benefits when you could work just because you don't particularly like the job?

Maybe the OP isn't entitled to benefits? If she has savings or her redundancy money was over a certain amount then she won't be eligible. If she has a mortgage then she won't get housing benefit so JSA will go nowhere towards her mortgage and other bills.

If your children wanted to quit work after just one day with no other job lined up would you be happy?

Far better to temp for them whilst you find other work than give up after one day and have no income coming in.

It is easier to get a job while you are already working iyswim. Regard this job as a stepping stone for a better position, keep it to update your cv & refresh your skills.
Give your self a job hunting time limit and attend any training courses that's on offer.

Depending on your background, have a look at university & HE college vacancy webpages as they advertise for a variety of roles from cook, admin staff & Lectures . It is worth trying out a different roles to see what suiys you.

I have bern given a months notice they said i did not have to work it and they will pay me just a for the month.

There was no redundancy pay to speak of i worked for them for only 9 months.

My dp pays the mortgage I helped with the bills and childcare.

I think I will go back and give it another go if Im at home I know I will get depressed about not having anything this is better than nothing.

Good point about would I be happy if my kids quit after one day no I would not Happy.

Your all right I need to stick with this and look out for something else in the meantime
and think im still earning.

Good for you OP.

This could be a great opportunity for you. DH has been made redundant twice in the last 5 years, and while each time has come as a nasty shock, once the initial feelings pass it has spurred him on to bigger and better things.
We are now in a much better position financially than if he was still at the same company, and he has realised that he is capable of achieving more than he thought possible. We both have actually, because we now run our own business having decided after redundancy number two that we needed to be more in control of our own situation!

Onwards and upwards.

Yes Alibaba, I think the OP would be better off on benefits for a short while than doing a job she absolutely hated after one day which is crap money and full time.

I think she would be far better off regrouping and looking for something else. If she's working full time it will be hard for her to look for another job intensively.

And the woman has been working, her husband has been working. I don't see the issue with claiming benefits for a few months. I doubt she will take out more than she's put in.

But if he is working then what will she get? Contribution based JSA which amounts to fuck all.

I think that is a dreadful attitude to have, really dreadful, and I'm pretty shocked to see anyone advocating it as an actual plan.

I didn't actually realize that she had a DP when I posted.

But if she could financially manage it (she might also get HB) then I would do it.

If you hate a job after one day how is it going to feel six months down the line?

Yep - you need to have a 'chin up and get on with it' attitude to it. It is a temp job, it is NOT your forever job - go in, be pleasant, do your job, go home. Pocket the money and keep looking for something much better!! Say 'no thank you' to any offers of making it permanent, just tell them you want the flexibility of temping :)

I'm normally in favour of people working but only with a purpose - earning money, or taking a low paid job if you are young and need experience or are getting back into the workplace after time off.

In effect, you would be paying them to work, once you have factored in childcare. If you earned more before working part time, the wages must be rubbish indeed. Never demean yourself. I'd tell the employer and the agency that you will not work for less than x amount and if they want you, that is what you they have to pay.

First days are always hell. Trying to remember where the loo is, not knowing what the etiquette is for making a coffee, not knowing who hates who and what office politics you are getting caught up in.

Give it a week and then see how you feel.

I would rather do that than have no job. It will get better after the first few days, and if you not, you will be motivated to find another one.

I have also found that it is much easier to get a job when you already have one.

In your position I would call my temo agency and say you are not that gussed about this position and woukd like to know when something else comes up.

But go in on Monday.

Really bad idea to get out of the workforce if you can at all avoid it.

How many agencies are you with? 2 is a good number.

1 isn't enough and 3 is too many as you turn down work too often.
