To say DS shouldn't have his iPod on when biking?

I never post on AIBU normally. DS (17) was just going for a bike ride when I noticed he was "plugged in". I said it was dangerous as he may not hear traffic. He got off and put the bike away. He wouldn't oppose me but he wouldn't go without it.
To be fair it's quiet country roads. Am I right or being too cautious?

I wouldn't and don't, but some people argue it's no different to motorists having the stereo on. Personally I don't even like having headphones on when walking, crossing roads etc though!

Morrigu · 06/10/2013 15:45

YANBU. I used to do the same while walking until I nearly stepped infront of a car. If I wasn't listening to music I probably would have heard it.

MortifiedAdams · 06/10/2013 15:46

YABU. Deaf people cycle. Runners wear earphones. Twats in Clios have NuMunkey Rave playong at sevebty thousand decabels.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 06/10/2013 15:49

I cycle and walk with music on. It's never been an issue, and I've done it for years. No one is fully listening to the road - people walk and talk, drive with loud music on, run listening to podcasts.

secretscwirrels · 06/10/2013 15:49

Actually I don't like him having loud music on while he's driving. At least not until he has more experience.
I am a bit over protective I think.

YANBU
Of course deaf people cycle, my hearings not brilliant, DD2 hears cars on the lanes long before I do.

However, not being able to hear is different to deliberately depriving yourself of a sense that might save your life.

Doesn't stop my 15y putting headphones in to go for a walk [angry

BeetleBugBaby · 06/10/2013 15:53

YANBU, I was told the same when riding my bike as a teenager. If you have music blaring in your ears it makes it more difficult to concentrate on and hear any oncoming traffic. To be fair, MortifiedAdams, deaf people would probably take more precautions being deaf and all.

Maybe a one ear compromise?
I hate to stand in the way of exercise.
