flea shampoo for pets vs head lice treatment

I was buying this today for an itchy, furry pet. It was 75p. Why is head lice shampoo about £10 - we've not had an infestation but the price difference would make it sorely tempting, would it not?!

No, I am not serious - there is no way I would use it on my children but it just shows how unreasonable the manufacturers of head lice shampoo are being.

because cheap flea shampoo wont work - you need flea TREATMENT which will cost about £8-10

I'm not sure the formula in pet flea shampoo would be safe for humans.
I know you should NEVER use dog flea shampoo on cats as it can be toxic for felines

HeySoulSister · 05/10/2013 20:46

Fgs... There's a world of difference between shampoo and 'treatment'!!

pingulingo · 05/10/2013 20:47

You may be onto something here - Frontline for kids - what a great idea! And it would make them smell like marzipan (ok, so slightly toxic but I'm pretty sure my toddler can't lick the back of his neck).

heysoulsister - I wasn't being serious, like I said! Grin

Flea shampoo contains absolutely nothing that actually kills fleas. It is just a bit of soap.
There have been studies with frontline spray and headline, but it is not effective enough for a licence and the small issue of how flammable it is.

HeySoulSister · 05/10/2013 20:55

So where is head lice shampoo £10??

KatyPutTheCuttleOn · 05/10/2013 20:55

Boots.

no that is headlice treatment - that will get rid of them

ravenAK · 05/10/2013 20:59

...but there jolly well should be a Frontline equivalent for dc that kills headlice!

Is the reason there isn't because it wouldn't work (fleas/lice not same thing), or is it deemed risky to use on humans?

KatyPutTheCuttleOn · 05/10/2013 21:00

Lyclear headlice shampoo is £10, saw it when looking for dandruff shampoo thanks to eczema.

I've only seen preventative shampoo, usually tea tree oil based. Nowhere best £10 though

stella69x · 05/10/2013 21:09

I've wished for front line for kids for years....... If onlyHmm

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/10/2013 23:09

Frontline does kill lice, but the flammability is a big issue. Frontline is a chitin inhibitor children do not have chitin so it does not affect them.

Adikia · 05/10/2013 23:38

don't know if it would work on headlice but flea shampoo makes your hair really greasy.
(left the dogs shampoo beside my shampoo, wasnt paying attention one morning, my hair was disgusting for a few days)

ravenAK · 06/10/2013 00:57

So one could frontline the kids if they didn't get too close to a naked flame after? Fab!

We've only ever had them once, & combing in the bath with conditioner seemed to do the trick, but a friend of mine says her dds are infested at least once a term, & they're a nightmare to get rid of.

I reckon there would be a fortune to be made in child-approved Frontline.

Ericaequites · 06/10/2013 03:04

I can't believe how common head lice are in the UK. Lice here are less prevalent, though not unknown.
Frontline for Kids seems a wise invention if possible. There's certainly a market.
