... Because its not being mentioned on the "rich parents get off your backside" stories about the child benefit tax story on BBC news.

I have posted about this before but to clarify-

If you a the SAHP of a child under the age of 12, and your partner earns over £60, you SHOULD STILL CLAIM CB, as you protect your state pension.

I believe you can claim, but opt not to receive the money, on receive the money and your partner will be taxed at 100%, but in either case, your pension contribution is protected.

Fuck - we opted out. Is there another way to do it?

and YANBU. obv. Smile

stella69x · 05/10/2013 19:33

I'm guessing its not being publicised due to the misconception that if your earning that 'much' you have adequate private pension provision so your not bothered about state provision.

Imwoodword · 05/10/2013 19:35

I only knew about this because of Mumsnet - it's certainly not well advertised! We receive the money still and will pay it back - we stick it in an account to get the interest on it!

nextphase · 05/10/2013 19:35

No, YANBU!
Lots of people don't seem to know about this, and they really should.
Good on you for highlighting it.

Wine or will that be one too many?

Namechanges can you opt back in? presumably somehow, because salaries change, and just because someone has opted out once, doesn't mean they will never be able to claim CB.

ilovepowerhoop · 05/10/2013 19:35

we opted out of the payment but will still be registered with the child benefit people as we did get the payment in the past

ilovepowerhoop · 05/10/2013 19:36

I.e. you still register for child benefit but dont get the money.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 05/10/2013 19:37

I assume you could just make a new claim?

It annoys me a lot because, ok you might have a high earning partner now, but that doesn't mean you will in the future, relationships and jobs may both change!

Well, if you are100% sure that you will never divorce your current HRT paying partner, nor that they will die (especially of unmarried) before retirement, then the "well you'll have private provision" mig be something you can rely on.

It really annoys me when news programmes (yes, BBC, I'm looking at you) doe not mention the importance of the NI credit.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 05/10/2013 19:42

Thank you nextphase, Wine accepted!

Very important..! If it hadn't been for the NI contributions from the years when I was claiming child benefit while a SAHM, I wouldn't have qualified for a full state pension - which as 'D'H had buggered off in the meantime was really rather vital...!!!
