About my neighbour's pipes

BigPawsBrown · 05/10/2013 19:15

I don't know my next door neighbour well.

Recently her pipes - I think! - have started making a racket. It lasts for 10-20 seconds a time and it's like a foghorn. Don't mind it in evenings etc but I had a chance at a lie in this morning and they woke me up. I think there might be air in their system.

WIBU to knock their door/leave a note and ask them to sort it? No idea of their financial situation etc (should I ask to contribute?) but it's getting worse as - presumably - they have the heating on a bit more.

It's been going on for about 6-8 weeks getting worse as times goes on. They surely must be aware of it as I can hear it in my house and I've not said anything to see if they sort it first.

WIBU to say something or would it seem petty?

we had this last year so I know just how loud it is!! Don't do a note, knock on her door and speak to her. Notes are for wimps :P

woollyideas · 05/10/2013 19:20

I agree. Notes are horrid. Just talk to them.

BigPawsBrown · 05/10/2013 19:20

I agree re notes.

So glad you understand how loud it is. Thought it'd sound petty but it is SO LOUD! Did your neighbour sort it?

shamefully it was OUR pipes making the racket in the end!! it was just when the radiator dial was turned to a certain point it would just start banging and wooooohhhhing. Neighbour still dislikes us though as I am at home all day and in her eyes this time should be spent weeding our (stupidly sized) driveway. I disagree.

BigPawsBrown · 05/10/2013 19:30

Hm. How do I tell for sure that it's not my pipes?

when it happens go to the first radiator in the sequence from your boiler (closest I suppose) and twiddle the dial, if it stops then its yours

HerrenaHarridan · 05/10/2013 19:36

I misread your op.

I used to live with someone who played the bagpipes.

Want to swap? Grin

If it only lasts 10-20 second at a time, it could be happening when neighbour turns a tap on/off maybe? After our local water board fitted meters to all our houses, about 10% of the houses in my road developed pipe hammer, as it's called. Water Board sorted it out, but it was blooming noisy while we had the problem. Mine kicked off every time I turned off my bathroom tap. Strangely, other taps were unaffected. I don't think it's difficult for a plumber to resolve - it only took them a few minutes to sort out.

BigPawsBrown · 05/10/2013 19:44

Ha, bagpipes!! Grin Fookin ell....

Well, it happens with our bathroom tap but quietly, and only the hot tap at the sink so we just hardly use it (mostly shower etc anyway). So does this mean if I call our water company they can fix ours and the neighbour's hammering pipes?

Are you sure it is coming from the neighbours house and not your own?

TheProsAndConsOfHitchhiking · 05/10/2013 19:47

sorry x post I had the screen on for a while whilst I was sorting out my unruly kitten Grin

TippiShagpile · 05/10/2013 19:49

Bleed your radiators first before you say anything. It might be you. Smile

SheRaHasTheAnswer · 05/10/2013 19:52

We found that adjusting the pressure on our pump sorted ours out- we had a plumber round and he lowered it on the cylinder in the airing cupboard (just a bit( round dial near the bottom- like thermostat)). Failing that he would have had to lag the offending pipes.
Try your pump, if it continues knock - I'm sure they'll be happy to look into it.

pudseypie · 05/10/2013 19:53

uh oh was worried for a while you live next door to me! Although I've not turned my heating on yet. When we do we get an intermittent low grade rattle in one room and I know next door can hear it as they told us but we need to lift all the floorboards in ds room to find the offending pipe and just can't afford the plumber. I thought it wasbnext door for ages until it turned out it was us but thankfully hadn't said anything!

BigPawsBrown · 05/10/2013 19:54

Ooooooh a kitten!

I'll look at the pump on the boiler, will try to dash for the boiler when it next happens!

I am having the same issue, neighbours pipes make a terrible foghorn noise, sometimes every 5 mins.

They have had a plumber in who can't find the problem, he even checked my place.

foslady · 05/10/2013 22:41

could it be when they flush the loo? I had to stop using one of our til I could afford to get the plumber in (and then it ended up being really cheap!) as the ball cock needed replacing. Luckily my neighbours had had the same problem that ended just before mine started and it was their shower that needed replumbing

foslady · 05/10/2013 22:42

D'oh! I meant lucky as they understood! (If you turned a tap on btw it stopped)

deesdeli · 02/01/2019 18:11

Hi there I have a similar problem. My neighbour is complaining that the water pipes are making a hammering noise when we turn off the water mains in the bathroom - we cant hear this - only my neighbour can but they are prone to complaining a lot. We have just had our bathroom done and the floor and wall are tiled...does anyone know if they can take legal action as we had a plumber come round who couldnt hear anything either.

Stressedout10 · 02/01/2019 18:25

I have this when I turn on or off my bath hot tap 4 visits from plumbers and basically need my boiler replumbed but as lm a council tenant they won't deal with it (even though it was there own plumbers who diagnosed the fault)
Neighbour's hate me (no shower) Blush
But the neighbour's on the other side (terrace) have just started to have the same problem and they also are council tenant Grin
