2 kids with chicken pox again?

my kids have both recently had chicken pox (few months ago) so obviously i was relieved when they were over and done with. but i found out yesterday my son has them again which was annoying and surprising considering its not even been a year.
Anyway i accepted that, but now i have noticed my daughter may have them again too??? whats going on???
According to the NHS 1 out of 8 kids get them again! anyone else had this happen? and does this mean they will get them EVERY TIME they go near contagious kids? Confused

My two youngest had them twice, both time totally pickled, my GP said it's not that uncommon.

phantomnamechanger · 05/10/2013 13:08

are you certain is it chicken pox again? not something else?

wonderingsoul · 05/10/2013 13:10

its n ot uncommom. was the first boat very bad?

both my dc have been vacinated against chicken pox, but ds2 still got the pox, allthough he only got 5 spots alltogether and was right as rain with it.

phantomnamechanger · 05/10/2013 13:10

I only ask as my friend mistook impetigo for chicken pox.
children can also get shingles, mind you, and that can flare up more than once, but only one part of the body is usually affected .

TheBlackPanther · 05/10/2013 13:22

never heard of impetigo, i might look into that

There are over 20 strains of chicken pox that fall it to five main sub-groups. The sub-groups do not all provide cross protection to other sub- groups so it is theoretically possible to get chicken pox 5 times. DD and all her cohort at nursery had it twice, once full blown spotty bout and once bout with no spots (rare, but possible) all just vaguely unwell diagnosed retrospectively with serology when one of the staff caught the same thing.

My eldest had chicken pox twice, spots all over and the second time he got them I caught it too! I was about 38!

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 05/10/2013 14:44

I had it twice when I was small, both times within a few months of each other iirc.

Its really annoying coz my son is a devil for picking them and now his face is a right mess :( my daughter got away with no scars last time but if she does have hem again she might not be as lucky.
sounds like its more common than i realized thanks all x

are they mainly on his face/where he can get at them? do they seem to go then flare up somewhere a little further away? if so it COULD be impetigo - weeping blisters that scab over - highly contagious and very common in nurseries/schools. Often people do not realise they/their child has it, it just looks like a small cut/scab at first but can spread very quickly.

phantomnamechanger · 05/10/2013 15:22

be warned if you are going to ggoogle impetigo pictures though as some of them are truly grim.

Morrigu · 05/10/2013 15:24

I've had it twice. Once very young, second time at thirteen very bad and ended in hospital.

quoteunquote · 05/10/2013 15:25

I found the best way to stop children picking at the spots, is to get all the visiting adults to show them their scars, nearly everyone has them(except me), once children have seen the scars, they tend to better at stopping themselves.

ProudAS · 05/10/2013 15:41

Are you sure it wasn't hand, foot and mouth last time OP?

Groovee · 05/10/2013 16:10

My friend thought her ds had chicken pox again but it turned out to be Moluscum Contagiosum

MrsMcEnroe · 05/10/2013 16:14

Sympathies OP. My DCs have both had chickenpox twice, both confirmed by GP and blood tests.

They have also had hand foot & mouth though, which can look like a mild dose of cpox...

TheBlackPanther · 05/10/2013 19:50

they both were covered all over last time and it seems to be the same again , but whatever it is it chicken pox/ impetigo or hand foot and mouth according to the net they will get better by themselves thank goodness.
Kids! such a worry but ya gotta love them :)
