AIBU to think charging people to use the public toilets is just wrong?!

I have always had an issue with the fact I have had to pay to use the toilet when I have been out due to the fact using the toilets is not a luxury but a necessity.

I was in London recently and they were charging 30p in the train station to go to the toilet. Now I can spare the money but I do feel that this is just another way to squeeze more money from us.

I will pay for me but when you have a small child that needs the toilet and sometimes every ten minutes then I think it is wrong to make people pay.

On top of the fact that with the amount of people who use the toilets , all that money they collect, the toilets I went in weren't that clean.

I no it is something silly to moan about but it just annoys me that there are more and more ways of having to dish our money out, however small it may be.

It's 20p in Sheffield station - and the loos aren't very nice.

They have a turnstyle that you go through. I wonder if it is to dissuade drug addicts.

NotYoMomma · 04/10/2013 18:28

meh I'd rather pay and have ok public loos than the free ones they used to have under the old city library in newcastle

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/10/2013 18:28

OK. If you don't pay, how are they cleaning; staffing; stopping people using it to shoot up or sleep; buying TP?

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/10/2013 18:29

" there are more and more ways of having to dish our money out"
Maybe, but this isn't one of the - it was ever thus. The phrase 'spending a penny' came about because public toilets ALWAYS charged.

MyNameIsWinkly · 04/10/2013 18:29

If they didn't charge they just wouldn't have toilets. Paper, cleaning products, cleaners/attendants etc cost money. So yabu.

Emyloukids29 · 04/10/2013 18:31

Well maybe they should start using the money to use on cleaning products then because the toilets I used were not that clean at all.

I have no problem with paying to use public toilets as long as they are clean, with paper and somewhere to wash your hands.

hermioneweasley · 04/10/2013 18:33

Toilets on the continent are typically 1 Euro - 30p seems like a bargain!

ChrisTheSheep · 04/10/2013 18:33

I think the "spending a penny" thing comes from the toilets at the Great Exhibition in 1851, which did indeed charge a penny (and indirectly contributed to a massive cholera outbreak a few years later, but that's another story).

mumofthemonsters808 · 04/10/2013 18:35

I don't really mind paying, as usually the toilets will be clean. The sparklyist public toilets I have used have always been in Scotland they were immaculate well worth the 20p charge. I would rather wet myself than use the portaloo's in the bus station in Manchester, just walking past them horrifies me.

ShatnersBassoon · 04/10/2013 18:36

I don't mind paying because they're usually clean and have paper and soap.

trixymalixy · 04/10/2013 18:37

I think the charging is less to do with covering costs, but to dissuade people hanging about in them.

Emyloukids29 · 04/10/2013 18:38

I don't mind paying either, my problem is that I watched so many people go into the toilet in the space of an hour when I was waiting for the train and I was thinking to myself that they must take so much but yet they are really bog standard toilets.

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 04/10/2013 18:39

For that 1 Euro, in Paris, DH entered a toilet which had feces everywhere, including the ceiling. DH just wanted to know HOW the person had done it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/10/2013 18:40

"bog standard"

RevelsRoulette · 04/10/2013 18:41

You mean you can still find a public loo? Grin They will soon be a thing of the past! If people weren't such filthy dirty bastards smearing their faeces up walls, putting graffiti on the walls and causing damage, then perhaps there would be lots of public toilets still.

The last public toilets I went in had pools of piss on the floor (which due to the crappy lighting, I failed to see until my trouser bottoms soaked them up Angry, a turd in the corner, no loo roll anywhere, no lock on the door, a peephole in the wall and only one flickering light (hence accidentally mopping up some dirty feckers piss!).

I don't understand where all these filthy pigs are or what the hell their homes look like, but they are the reason the rest of us have trouble finding a loo when we need one. Dirty mucky filthy buggers.

And don't even get me started on the sex! Who in their right mind wants to shag in a pissy pooey stinking bog ffs.

Until or unless such foul people stop being so revolting, we'll have to pay more and more and have more and more loo closures.

Gosh. I needed that. Grin

BloodiedWellies · 04/10/2013 18:43

Is this my chance to repeat again the time I went into the toilets in Vienna (1 euro FWIW) and went into 'Herren' because I thought that those were the toilets for 'her'?

[shoehorns in a favourite anecdote]

BloodiedWellies · 04/10/2013 18:45

I also had the misfortune to go into public loos in Moscow that i honestly think some poor person had either been stabbed in or shot in, because i have never ever before or since seen so much blood.

BloodiedWellies · 04/10/2013 18:45

(Can't remember what that cost though).

superbagpuss · 04/10/2013 18:49

I went to some in London on the south bank

I paid once (quite a lot though) and pushed me and DT in and we all used the same cubicle

I thought that was OK, but saw another lady trying to do the same (toddler and baby in pushchair) and she was told off by the lady in charge

I quickly moved the children along Blush

ilove · 04/10/2013 18:50

just never, ever lean back when sat on a loo with an automatic flush...

fuzzpig · 04/10/2013 18:52

Don't mind if they are decent. The loos at London Victoria (up on the food court level anyway) are absolutely disgusting

ModeratelyObvious · 04/10/2013 18:52

F

ModeratelyObvious · 04/10/2013 18:53

Don't pay on the south bank, the ones in the royal festival hall are free.

BrokenSunglasses · 04/10/2013 18:55

I don't mind paying a few pence when the toilets are nice and well maintained, but I begrudge it when they are manky.
