To ban Tracy Beaker

Snoopytwist · 04/10/2013 17:09

My 7 yr old DD has been watching Tracy Beaker/Dumping Ground episodes for a little while, but has become a bit hooked on them and is constantly asking to watch them all on You tube. I have noticed in the last few weeks though, her attitude is getting awful - really stroppy, shouting and answering back.

Now DD is not a perfect little angel, so it might be that she is just going through a phase, but I am also thinking that she could be picking up a few tips from Tracy Beaker. Should I ban it even though she loves it and if so, what else could she watch that is more appropriate but still grippy?!

Yabu. It's Horrid Henry who needs to be banned!! Little fucking twat.

DelGirl · 04/10/2013 17:26

I hate both of those and i'm sure they had a negative effect on dd. Tracey beaker a definite no no in this house and horrid henry is now too. Having just had tv connected here, we are in Italy, it isn't a problem now as she won't bother with watching it on the pc anymore.

Chocotrekkie · 04/10/2013 17:28

Yanbu. Banned all the books too..

Wilberforce2 · 04/10/2013 17:32

Yanbu I haven't seen TB but I've recently banned Horrid Henry the horrible little shit!

GretaGroovy · 04/10/2013 17:35

You are not being unreasonable. I banned it too.
I hated the level of conflict there was, week after week. I appreciate drama=conflict but at such a young age, it isn't obvious to a child that these are chippy little drama-school twits acting all big in front of a camera, not real people who are actually prone to a laugh and a giggle and often hate falling out.

badbelinda · 04/10/2013 17:39

I banned it a few yrs ago when my 2 were similar age to your DD for exactly that reason. Noticed attitude starting to creep in which hadn't been an issue before and didn't like the way they all talk to each other on the programme. Both kids accepted it reasonably philosophically. alternatives - Horrible histories fantastic but now finished. however I'm sure will be repeated ++ and available on you-tube. Blu Peter great as always. MI High doesn't seem too bad.

TotemPole · 04/10/2013 17:40

I think the worst thing about it is that Cam woman. She spent years not committing to fostering Tracy. She had her to live with her then sent her back to the dumping ground. Then when Tracy is 16ish and all grown up she says she'll adopt her.

GretaGroovy · 04/10/2013 17:43

I really would like to have a word with whoever commissions CBBC dramas. A lot of it brings on the attitude (WolfBlood was a particularly bad one) and has to be banned. It's hard explaining that you think the programme is rubbing off on your otherwise sunny child and real people don't interact with each other that way! (Unless they are narcissists and twats.)

fieldfare · 04/10/2013 17:44

Yanbu, it's banned here too.

iWantChampagneOnColaBudget · 04/10/2013 17:45

yes, tracey beaker is a gobby little brat, have always enjoyed ROY myself but then i think the accents are lovey too!

Greengagesummer · 04/10/2013 17:47

What Gretagroovy said +1...

NormanTheForeman · 04/10/2013 17:49

YANBU. I hate Tracy Beaker. It just seems to show that you can get away with appalling behaviour and everyone will still think you're wonderful.

Longtallsally · 04/10/2013 18:15

Yes to banning Horrid Henry on TV - books don't seem to have the same impact, but the programme (even the theme tune) is just awful.

Don't forget Dennis the Menace too!

mrsjay · 04/10/2013 18:18

My dds grew up on the orginal tracy beaker I can't say they had any problems withh back chat because of it I never noticed an increase after they watched it, yanbu to want to ban it if your dd is being cheeky but i do think they can watch something and we can say well thatis a tv programme tracy is very naughty blah blah.

Snoopytwist · 04/10/2013 18:22

Phew, you have all made me feel much better and am reassured that I am not being precious overbearing parent. I heard one of the characters tell Tracy to "shut her big fat gob" yesterday and that was just about the last straw.

I will try Horrible Histories (I could watch them all day) but DD does love a bit of drama rather than facts. Have seen that Real Entertainment on Freeview is replaying repeats of The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie, so think I will try to convert her!

I had to ban Max and Ruby thinks herself very lucky her boys are too old for horrid Henry tv shows

derektheladyhamster · 04/10/2013 18:37

But I loved the Horrid Henry books Grin

notnowbernard · 04/10/2013 18:44

Can get banning the tv series but not the books?

You can't ban books! Shock

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 04/10/2013 18:54

Maybe I'm the only one but I think that there is not much point banning it as your DC will probably be exposed to shouting, lying, stealing etc in their lives starting from about now- you can't protect them from everything, unfortunately.
I don't think it is one of the 'nicest' children's programs but I think it enables children to be exposed to different situations without actually being exposed to them iyswim.
Some children may want to discuss some of the issues raised in the program and it allows the parent to talk about it with the child and prepare them for a potential real life situation.
To put it into perspective, most children aged 9/10 I've worked with seem to watch things like Eastenders / Corrie which is a lot more vile, IMHO. And it's on mainstream tv in the middle of the day on weekends....

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 04/10/2013 18:56

I'm sure many of us have very fond memories of watching/ reading Just William when we were younger and he did some HORRENDOUS stuff!!!!

2tiredtocare · 04/10/2013 19:01

What happened in Max and Ruby to make it ban worthy? I thought that was a cartoon for very young children

Perspective21 · 04/10/2013 19:09

Give Tracy and her friends a break, I think it's fab...my children have loved it! The children have bags of attitude because they have to survive as " looked after" children, often with difficult personal lives.

The children are often very supportive of each other and show lovely characteristics too. You can have the conversation about the dramatic effect being heightened for tv....can't you remember the fuss about Grange Hill, when we loved it and our parents used to moan.

Ps. I am loving Wolfblood too, amazing children's tv..this week my DDs were discussing the different tensions/secrets in the relationships between main characters.

I have to stress, you have to sit and watch these programms properly to understand the nuances in the plots. They are not just children "mouthing off".
