to ask for flexible working if offered a job?

I'm a teacher, and currently work 4 days a week. I have an interview coming up in a new school, for a full time position (it's rare to see 4 days advertised in schools - my current post was full time, and I applied for 4 days after having my dcs which they agreed to). I really want the job, and would do it full time, but in my dream scenario I'd be 4 days like I am now. If they offer me the job, is it OK to ask them then about the possibility of 4 days before I start? Or should I start the job, get my feet under the table a bit and then apply later on?

I don't think there is any harm in asking if you're prepared to do full time if they say "no". For all you know they might actually prefer to hire someone for 4 days a week, but can't advertise it as such as it would put people off!

Thanks. I just don't want to look cheeky or like I'm not committed to the job (I am!)

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask. I mean that's your current situation so you are just wanting to know if it's possible.

If you ask about 4 days then you need to also be clear that will do 5 days if needed - I don't work in education but I do employ lots of part-time as well as full-time people. Often it doesn't matter but it would be a red flag if an applicant at interview asked for 4 days if I needed 5. On the other hand, asking about the possibility wouldn't put me off and I would be honest.

Overtired, I don't think I would say anything at interview - I would wait to see if I'm offered the job and ask about the possibility then. But yes, I'd make it very clear that I would be happy to do 5 days if 4 days is not an option.

Do you think that's OK, then? I don't need to wait until I've been doing the job for a while first?

I think the best time to ask is at the point of offer. They are more likely to consider it while they are keen to secure you, and while they are in 'problem solving mode' (i.e. solving the problem of a vacancy). Just be clear if the answer is no you'd still be happy to work five days.

As a line manager I'd be quite annoyed if you agreed to five days, started the job, and then wanted to reduce after a few months. Anyway, I don't think employers have to consider requests for flexible working until you've had 26 weeks service, so you'd have to wait six months to ask anyway.
