Worked has a TA for a school for nearly 3 years on a casual basis. Done everything that has been asked of me, sometimes working full-time for months on end. Employers have always praised my work. I've hanged on so long in there for a Contract.

On wednesday I was pulled out of my class, took into the store cupboard and told there was no hours for me as from tomorrow! Due to reshuffle of staff and budgets. It felt like I'd been kicked in the teeth, then expected to return to class and finish the day.

I was shocked to be treated this way, legally I know employer is in the right to do this, but working there so long I ecpected more than the store cupboard.

Other staff shocked too.

An hour later they asked if I woukd cover afternoons while someone is off sick, so i am still there for the moment.

Feeling really cross to be treated in such a way, surely taken into an office, end of the working day would of been better for everyone.

Feek like going to the head and telling him as I have not seen him since this happened but on the other hand don't want to shoot myself in the foot!

Any advice please.

Are you in a union? If you have worked regualr hours for 3 years you may have some employment rights as not technically casual. Hopefully someone with some more knowledge will be a long soon. YOu might be best posting in the employment topic.

No not in a union.

Currenly writing down everthing I've worked.

Thank you for your reply, deputy head is off sick for a few weeks. Thinking I will go and see her when she returns. Can't believe employers can get away with treating employees like this.

Luckily I have another part time job which I kepted, always in my mind no contract at school. Feels like I have worked myself hard for all this time for nothing.

I have told the business manger at school how I feel, and basically I want a job.

That was really inappropriate way to handle the situation, very disrespectful and rude.

If they are asking you to do cover, try to see that as a good thing, while you look for another job, it's lurgy season so they will need a lot of cover.

I really dislike the way people do not cherish faithful hardworking employees, I hope you find an employer who will appreciate you.

BrokenSunglasses · 04/10/2013 11:28

Whoever spoke to you didn't handle the situation well, but if they haven't got the hours for you then there's not much they can do apart from break the news in an appropriate manner. School budgets are ridiculously tight nowadays.

FrauMoose · 04/10/2013 11:41

I'd ring ACAS. Depending on the nature of your casual work at the school, you could have rather more rights than you think.

DidIMissSomething · 04/10/2013 11:54

I too think you may have more rights than you think - if there is no formal written contract then terms of contract are implied by how the arrangement usually works. You should get some proper advice as soon as possible.
So sorry you were treated so badly.

yummincepie · 04/10/2013 12:12

Thank you so much for all your advice, knocks your confidence when your treated in such away. Not the type of person to make a fuss, always the one to work hard and keep my head down.

Will look into my rights for future reference when I speak to deputy head.

On way into school now, will keep workn
