To let dd read pretty much what she wants to?

Dd is seven, year three and a good reader. She seems to lack confidence or perseverence with longer books and reads lots of short books, often going from one to another. Should I just let her get on with it, or encourage her to read something longer and stick to it? The one she's got from school is deathly dull.

DD1's nearly 13 and she only read shorter things when she was 7/8.

But she's a prolific reader now with tons of books on the go at once, couple of old favorites, a new one, maybe one I've given her etc etc.

The only time I've wondered whether I should intervene in her reading is when she was 10/11 and asking to get the Twilight books, and given that I'd read things that were totally inappropriate when I was young (about ways of dying rather than sex) I didn't want to make the wrong call, because I wasn't able to handle what I'd read.

DD2 usually has at least 3 books on the go simultaneously and one will as always be a light read. I would second reading her longer stuff out loud at bedtime and as long as it is gripping she will eventually want to read it for herself. your DD loves reading - celebrate!

Don't worry, let her read what she enjoys, don't worry about the length. I was at a curriculum meeting for my 8 year old this week and the teacher kept reiterating please encourage them to read something - be it novels, joke books, annuals, magazines - anything will help.

If she likes reading, let her read whatever she wants - I was a bookworm from an early age but it was DESPITE the books the school made us read - they were crap!

At this age my Dad read a lot with me and we alternated reading a page each - it really encouraged me to try new stuff. Worth a try?

Please do not force her to plough through books she's not interested in.
Go to the library and bookshops with her. Read with her and to her; give her lots of choice but don't dictate. That will put her right off.
