My DH is going back to his old job a week on monday. He's gone to work today and is handing in his resignation but the owner isn't in yet, he want to finish today (only been in this job 4 months) he wants to leave the letter on his desk and go I've told him thats not fair and he should wait for him to come in and tell him that he's leaving WWYD

Resigning in person is always better, yes.

Is he on a zero notice contract at the moment then?

Mollywashup · 03/10/2013 09:15

Don't know but he said he would just walk out anyway he's not wanting paying for this week.

What about a reference though? That would worry me...

Tailtwister · 03/10/2013 09:21

I would always resign in person. He might not need to be paid for this week, but I always think it's best to leave on the best terms possible. It's a small world and people talk. It's best to guard your working reputation, especially in this economic climate.

I suppose this current employer must have done something pretty awful to your DH to not deserve the courtesy of a weeks notice?

He clearly doesn't mind leaving them short handed with other colleagues having to cover for him or the owner having to double his own hours to cover or go through the costly process of finding a temp at short notice.

Tilly333 · 03/10/2013 09:29

Does he care about possibly leaving his current employer in the lurch, with no-one to do his job? I think it's a bit lame - and would never burn bridges like that. But hey ho, each to his own. Do speak to manager in person at least though.

HorryIsUpduffed · 03/10/2013 09:31

Leaving an employer in the lurch is bad. It will get around. Really not to be recommended.

To be honest the whole thing makes your husband sound really unreliable - going from one job to another and back again is messing everyone about.

Mollywashup · 03/10/2013 09:31

Is was a new position and tbh there wasn't enough work for him to do so he's not leaving anyone to cover for him they will just go back to how they were before he joined.

I've left a job within two months of starting. Bloody awful place. Line manager was out of the office, phoned him and said that was it. Left there and then without saying goodbye.

Has to be done some times. Did move onto another job (professional role) within a week of leaving. Just goes down as 'contract' working on my CV !

I was made lots of promises starting the job, none of them apperared. Another colleague who had started just before me had left also.
